Complying with Data Regulations from the EU, or from any other country, depends on the ability of your software to discover and protect (encrypt) of all forms of Personally Identifiable Information or PII. Finding the simple Direct Identifiers such as Social Security, email, phone, zip code, address and so on, is an easy one, though don’t forget this has to be done on ALL the data contained in your mainframe, servers, laptops, office documents, PDF files, XML files, live streams of business data, live streams of Social Media, Third Party Data Acquisitions, and other forms of Data Assets.

Then there are Indirect Identifiers that must also be protected. These are fields that by themselves do not identify an individual, but when grouped together they do identify, or closely identify, a specific individual. As an example, Birthdate, Gender and Mailing Code can be used to identify a very small group of people and are considered a GDPR violation if found unprotected in your data environment. Don’t overlook the fact that these fields do not need to be in the same file to constitute a violation. If they are on three different files in three different systems they are still a GDPR violation.
