Will Being Indispensable Will Save Your Job?

Becoming the only staffer with certain skills might feel like job insurance. Turns out, to some bosses, it’s a red flag.

It’s career advice we’ve all heard: Make yourself indispensable. Many who thought they’d accomplished that goal have been burned in recent white-collar layoffs. Now, some jilted workers and others who’ve witnessed recent job cuts say there’s no such thing as an irreplaceable employee.

In related news, surging wages and staff shortages in the U.S. are spurring companies to look across the pond and offshore jobs in the U.K.

Gen Z is becoming the "toolbelt generation."?More young workers are going into skilled trades as disenchantment with the college track continues, and rising pay and new technologies shine up jobs from plumber to electrician.

Indeed, as technology continues to advance, certain jobs remain resilient to automation and AI. Professions like plumbing, electrician work, construction, and skilled trades often require a human touch that technology can't fully replicate. These jobs involve problem-solving, adaptability, and a level of craftsmanship that machines can't easily replicate. The security and stability offered by these professions are attractive to many, especially in an uncertain job market. Additionally, as you've noted, the demand for skilled trades is likely to remain high as long as there is infrastructure to build and maintain. It's heartening to see that Gen Z and future generations are recognizing the value in these professions. Embracing these trades not only provides job security but also contributes to essential services and infrastructure development. My personal career journey serves as a valuable reminder that career paths are not always linear, and sometimes the most fulfilling opportunities lie in unexpected places.
