Big wins: what to do after landing one.

Do you know: a team is most likely to concede just after scoring a goal? For coaches, the period after scoring is the most precarious.

A recent study showed that teams who just conceded, are more likely to score in the next five minutes, than those who scored. The conceding team gets a boost while the team who scored, need to reboost. Even my favourite team, arsenal, suffers from this very thing (it really saddens me).

It’s no surprise, that the productivity of workers of many companies, wanes just after a major win. Or freelancers find it hard to land the next big client, after getting a big fish.

Even individuals, just after having a big win, lose the motivation that’s required to do more. It’s the same reason why 70 per cent of lottery winners, later end up broke.

So as a company or an individual, what should you do just after a massive win?

Recognize that your work becomes harder

Your work is easier when you have just one client.

It’s hard when it becomes two. And becomes harder when you land the third client. You get my drift, right?

Also, big wins translate you to a higher level, which demands more effort to stay on. Failure to increase your effort could lead to a flight down the ladder. And it’s usually harder to fall than to climb up.

Reflection

The time just after a big win, is a great time for reflection.

For a company, you could organize a brainstorming session where everyone is free to give feedback.

A typical feedback session should incorporate these questions:

• How was this achieved?
• What parts of the journey to success were enjoyed?
• What went well?
• What things should have been done better?
• What are the lessons?
• What obstacles did we face and how did we overcome them?

The goal of answering these questions is to come up with a repeatable template, to achieve bigger wins in the future.
