Is Big Tech Ready To Transform Healthcare? – This And More News In Digital Health This Week

Over the past week, we covered what big tech has been doing in medicine in our series on Tech Giants In Healthcare. We took Amazon, Google/Alphabet, IBM, Microsoft, Apple and NVIDIA under the microscope to see how they aim to change medicine. With the most projects in healthcare, these six have the weight to shake the world. Let's just hope they do it for the better.

15 THINGS LEADING UP TO THE DISMANTLING OF GOOGLE HEALTH

Google has begun dissolving its health division Google Health. It looks to split its healthcare projects and teams across several areas of the company. The move comes as Google Health's chief, David Feinberg, MD, announced he would be joining EHR company Cerner in October as its new president and CEO.

Who would've thought that the person seemingly responsible for bringing all health-related projects under one roof, will leave the building and that a company, dealing with electronic health records (and making an actual profit) could sweep away the CEO of Google Health.

ROBOT COULD OPERATE A DOCKING STATION INSIDE THE GUT

Researchers announced that they have built a robotic system capable of a supply drop, functioning entirely inside the gut. The system involves an insulin delivery robot that is surgically implanted in the abdomen and swallowable magnetic capsules that resupply the robot with insulin. This kind of delivery system could prove useful to people with type 1 diabetes, especially those who must inject insulin into their bodies multiple times a day.

A robotic docking station inside the body – it's not science fiction, but a new study (in pigs). Although this technology is still in its concept phase, the future it envisions is bright. Such a painless and effective method of drug delivery! Researchers are hopeful the method can be used to treat other conditions as well. If they can prove that the system is efficient and more importantly safe, imagine the ways it could be used to improve health!

VIRTUAL REALITY SYSTEM TO ENTERTAIN DURING MRI SCANS

Researchers at King’s College London developed a virtual reality system that is intended to distract and calm patients who find MRI scans challenging, including children and other vulnerable individuals. The technology is intended to make the scans more enjoyable for patients and reduce the likelihood that a scan will be unsuccessful because a patient moves or requests to exit the scanner.

VR should already been implemented in practices all over the world! Just think of your previous visit to your dentist – wouldn't it be nice to be in the Bahamas while your doc is drilling your teeth?!

AN ALGORITHM COMBINING A.I. WITH E.I.

On our Patreon channel this week I've talked with Dr. Yossi Bahagon, Co-Founder and Active Chairman of Sweetch about how an algorithm can combine A.I. with E.I.: emotional intelligence. A.I. platform Sweetch collects data from the patients’ smartphones and devices and uses it to improve their health users’ health, prevent diseases, and ultimately, to help patients lead a healthier lifestyle. Find out what else we talked about with Dr. Bahagon!

Originally a family physician, co-founder Dr. Yossi Bahagon recognised the importance of patient adherence early and understood the need to support patients throughout their journey. Sweetch does just that.
