Big Shout Out! To our guys !
Dave Rosolen
Partner at Encore Windows and Doors Partner at Soundproof Windows Canada Ltd.
They are out there getting it done! and getting it done correctly. Day in and day out. Time after time. We don't praise them enough for their hard work and meticulous ways. Our window and door installers be it George, Sean, Michael, Glen and the rest follow the Window wise and Fit methodology, they use the proper sealants, insulation and materials, they understand and follow the building code section of window installation. They have been heard explaining to our clients why the new windows are set back further than the original windows, why 2 passes of insulating foam are required and why the bead of caulking is such.
They are a rare and special breed that have our respect, teaching us non installers things we'd never know. But what we know is this: Most windows and doors do not get installed correctly or let's rephrase it: most windows and doors do not get installed optimally which results in the compromise of the rated efficiency of the window, yes this is a subject that has been and continues to be written about in our industry publications. This seems hard to believe however there are math formulas in building science that calculate how much efficiency is lost when a window is installed outside of the insulated wall.
The importance of proper window installation is very evident as it has the attention of the industry. An article in the latest edition of Fenestration review authored by Treena Hein is titled "Enforce It" The article is about enforcing compliance with windows and installations, it goes on to say that it's unknow how many windows get installed that are non-compliant and that more inspections are needed in order to make this determination. Windows have to meet ratings in air-water tightness and energy performance, and the ratings are becoming tighter as the new Energy Star version will be released. (It is to note that ratings is a whole different discussion) In some parts of the country inspectors don't have the resources to inspect windows properly as their efforts will go to more consequential areas such as electrical or HVAC which can cause serious danger if not up to code. In conclusion windows are one part of a home system that if not done properly will loose excessive energy and possibly leak in certain wet conditions, this consequence is not as dangerous as a faulty electrical or a faulty HVAC system. This said; home owners should expect all the systems in a home to be working properly including windows that can provide natural light, ventilation and a level of efficiency that doesn't cause discomfort. We are in the window business and our job is to provide a good window and a proper installation and on this note again kudos to our great installers.
