Big Rocks, Big Wheels: How Cycling Can Revolutionise Your Life and Keep Your Priorities Rolling Smoothly

Big Rocks, Big Wheels: How Cycling Can Revolutionise Your Life and Keep Your Priorities Rolling Smoothly

The Big Rocks of Life

Ah, the ever-elusive balance of life—an art more complex than a Picasso and as delicate as a soufflé. If you’re anything like me, you’ve often felt like you’re juggling too many things at once. Enter the concept of "Big Rocks." I confess, this construct is not mine. It was conceived way back at the turn of the century by a fellow author, Dr. Gary F. Russell, who literally then wrote the book on it – “Big Rocks: Balancing Life & Work ” (2005). It was a privilege to be involved in aiding Gary in his book’s creation.

Not only was it my first dabble into exploring research and strategy to support an author’s writing, but it was also the beginning of what came to be a lifelong personal challenge and struggle for me, as well as lighting the flame of curiosity into the world of becoming a writer/author myself in due course …

As I shared with you in a previous article , I’ve always been crap at achieving ‘work-life balance’. Until now. It was a complete enigma to me. Or was it a misnomer?

Work IS life for those of us who love our work, perhaps?

In my observation, LIFE is homogeneous for some, with a multitude of lovely elements rolled into LIFE, along a varying continuum of which the ‘continual flow’ of a combination of these elements rolling into ONE, take up time. And yet, in contrast, LIFE is heterogeneous for others - a variety of contrasting elements independently played out in neat boxes of time - with the same competing challenge of where best to ‘spend’ that time (for whatever reason).

Nonetheless, whether you or I experience life as homogeneous or heterogeneous, after 52 years I’ve come to the realisation and conclusion that these are my five key priorities (not necessarily in the right order) that keep my life in sync: Family, Work, Leisure, Significant Other / Friend(s), and Self-Wellbeing. You may have other priorities / Big Rocks. I dare you to challenge yourself to find your personal success strategy for balance in your life …

Think of them as the boulders that build the foundation of your existence. Everything else? Pebbles. Pebbles are important, but they can wait—much like my urge to devour an entire packet of biscuits after a long ride. Cue TheNakedLawyer *scoffscoffscoff munching on a plateful of dessert treats; you know how she loves to chuck Muse Bombs at me to spark inspiration whilst I write. ??

Not to confuse you, cycling is (obviously) not a pebble for me. Biking is one of my key priorities, but it falls firmly within my Big Rocks of Leisure, Significant Other / Friend(s) and Self-Wellbeing. It could be for you too …

So, how do we stack these Big Rocks in the jar of life without making a mess of it? And more importantly, how can something as simple and fun as cycling help you keep those rocks from tumbling all over the place?

1. Family: Pedaling Together is Staying Together

Have you ever noticed how cycling with the family brings out the best in everyone? Sure, there might be a few squabbles over who gets to ring the bell (let’s face it, it's usually the youngest), but a family that cycles together stays together.

Take the summer, for instance. Hire a few cycles and set off for a day out. The little ones will love the adventure, the older ones get to feel the wind in their hair (no selfies while riding, please!), and you, dear reader, get the satisfaction of knowing you’re promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. Plus, it’s an excellent way to get everyone off their screens and into the real world. The memories you’ll create? Priceless.

Why This is Important:

Family time strengthens bonds, and engaging in an activity like cycling is a fantastic way to connect, communicate, and create lasting memories.

2. Work: The Great Work-Life Balance Wheel

Work is a Big Rock that can easily become an overgrown boulder, crushing everything in its path. But what if I told you that cycling could actually improve your work-life balance?

Yes, that’s right. Imagine this: You’re commuting to work, not by sitting in traffic, but by cycling. Your morning commute transforms into a refreshing start to the day. You arrive at the office (or your home office, we’re hybrid now, darling!) alert, energized, and ready to tackle those meetings. Plus, the endorphins from cycling can help combat stress, making you more productive and focused. I’m writing from experience btw ??

Why This is Important:

Cycling can be an efficient, eco-friendly way to commute while also providing you with exercise that boosts your mood and energy levels, which are crucial for a successful workday.

3. Leisure: The Wheels of Fun

Leisure is the Big Rock that reminds us life isn’t just about work—it’s also about play and socialising. And what better way to play than by hopping on a cycle and exploring new trails, parks, or even city streets?

Whether you’re cycling solo, with friends, or with a group from your local community, there’s a unique joy in exploring the world on two wheels. It’s freedom, it’s adventure, and it’s a ticket to discovering places you’d never reach by car.

And don’t forget—cycling doesn’t have to be all about burning calories. Why not cycle to your favourite café or pub, enjoy a leisurely lunch, and then cycle back home? It’s indulgence with a side of health benefits. More *scoffscoffscoff *crunching *lipsmacking by TheNakedLawyer ?? Too much troughing and not enough cycling by Her Nakedness going on today in my opinion!!??

Why This is Important:

Leisure is essential for recharging your mental and emotional batteries. Cycling offers a perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and physical activity.

4. Significant Other: A Tandem Affair

Now, if you really want to score some relationship points, *prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs TheNakedLawyer, consider this: cycling with your significant other. It’s the perrrrrrrrrfect excuse to spend quality time together, enjoying each other’s company without the distractions of daily life.

And if you really want to take things up a notch, why not try a tandem bike? Yes, it’s the ultimate test of teamwork and communication. Can you synchronize your pedaling? Will you argue over who’s steering? (most likely) Or will you find that perfect rhythm where you’re in sync, gliding smoothly along? *Ooh-la-la Either way, it’s bound to be an adventure—and one that’ll bring you closer together, one pedal at a time.

Why This is Important:

Sharing an activity like cycling with your significant other strengthens your bond, creates shared experiences, and adds a spark of fun to your relationship. *chuckling *poke TheNakedLawyer whispering in my ear would like to share (from her experience btw) that as you improve your fitness level your activities in the bedroom may also benefit! ??

5. Self-Wellbeing: The Solo Ride to Inner Peace

Last, but definitely not least, is the Big Rock of Self-Wellbeing. We often overlook this one, don’t we? But here’s the thing—if you’re not taking care of yourself, those other Big Rocks are going to topple.

Cycling is an incredible way to boost your physical, mental and relationship health; and if you are to believe TheNakedLawyer, perhaps even your sexual prowess!??

Whether you’re pushing your limits on a challenging trail or climb, or enjoying a leisurely ride through a park, cycling helps you disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with yourself. It’s your time to think (to be creative perhaps?), to breathe, and to just BE. And let’s not forget the satisfaction of hitting those fitness goals—because who doesn’t love a bit of self-improvement?

Why This is Important:

Prioritizing your self-wellbeing through activities like cycling ensures you have the energy, health, and mental clarity to manage all the other Big Rocks effectively.

5 Key Takeaways to Get Your Big Rocks Prioritized

  1. Family Time: Plan regular family cycling outings. It’s a fun, active way to bond and make memories.
  2. Work-Life Balance: Consider cycling to work to boost your energy levels and reduce stress. It’s eco-friendly and good for your health.
  3. Leisure Time: Make cycling a part of your leisure activities. Whether solo or with friends, it’s a great way to explore and unwind.
  4. Relationship Building: Cycle with your significant other to strengthen your relationship. Tandem biking, anyone?
  5. Self-Wellbeing: Use cycling as your personal time to enhance your physical and mental health. It’s a journey to inner peace on two wheels.

Make Cycling Your Habit for Life

So, there you have it (unusually short(ish) and concise for me and TheNakedLawyer) —the Big Rocks of life and how cycling can help you keep them neatly stacked and in balance. Whether you’re cycling for family time, commuting to work, exploring for leisure, bonding with your partner, or simply finding peace within yourself, those two wheels have the power to transform your life. Indeed, it certainly has for me …

Why not start today? Grab a bike—hire one if you must —and get rolling. You’ll soon find that cycling isn’t just an activity; it’s a way of life, a habit that can help you prioritize what truly matters. It certainly helped me and my best chum TheNakedLawyer. It could help you too ??

Bless you Chrissie Lightfoot! Far too many of my colleagues were so deeply invested in their dedication to their careers, they were deceased within a year of retirement. Life is much too short to squander on mere existence and temporal subsistence
