There’s no doubt that 2022 has been a crazy year for many in construction. We came out of Covid; we had to deal with the volatility of material prices, the shortage of supplies, energy price increases, and the possibility of tax rises. It’s been painful for many, but not for everyone. Some construction companies have thrived during 2022. They’ve been booked up for months, increased their prices, and protected themselves against material price increases.

So, why do some thrive, and others only just survive? It’s down to good planning and good forecasting.

When you can see problems on the horizon, there are two things you can do. You can bury your head in the sand and keep doing things the way you always have hoping that everything will get better: or you can put a plan in place to mitigate the risk; protect yourself and run the business on a tight leash.

How have you been running your business through 2022? More importantly, how will you run things in 2023 when it's going to be even tougher for those without a plan.

There are 5 steps in The Big Plan that will help you deal with any economic uncertainty next year. Obviously, the first is to Plan; you need to know your destination, and you need to avoid roadblocks along the way. In any plan there are things that crop up that you must deal with, so you will need to reassess the plan and then push forward.

The next step is to Attract more tenders and more clients. To do this you will need to find your USP, your unique selling point. What do you do that is different, or better, than your competitors? Armed with this knowledge you can build your unique brand and start to fill your sales funnel. The work that will keep you busy in 2023!

Once you have attracted potential clients you need to Convert them into orders, but not at any price. You need to make the profit you have planned for, so you need to make sure that you have a profitable pricing structure. Then you nurture your leads and deliver a perfect pitch that that results in a contract.

With the order in your hand, you need to be able to Deliver everything that you’ve promised, and this depends on having a structure for success in place. Additionally, you need to have efficient and smooth on-site operations, and off-site procedures.

Finally, you need to Scale up your operation to meet demand; by measuring and managing, developing super teams and gain loyalty.

The Big Plan covers all these areas, so don’t just ask yourself how much profit would you like to make next year, ask how much do you plan to make next year?
