A Big Personality and Insatiable Curiosity

A Big Personality and Insatiable Curiosity

A few years ago, Rich and I took an online personality test that provided scoring for the following personality traits

  1. Agreeableness: Compassion and Politeness
  2. Conscientiousness: Industriousness and Orderliness
  3. Extraversion: Enthusiasm and Assertiveness
  4. Neuroticism: Withdrawal and Volatility
  5. Openness to Experience: Openness and Intellect

In the categories of Extraversion, with sub-categories of Enthusiasm and Assertiveness, my scores were 99, 98, and 99, respectively.?

If we meet for the first time ever in an elevator, I will likely engage you in a conversation. I'm fueled by native curiosity (my scores in Openness to Experience is 99 as well)?

As my siblings would tell you, my personality style is BIG.

Thankfully, other scores, such as Compassion, are high, and Neuroticism is low; otherwise, I might not like myself.?

These traits served me well as a chanteuse and playing Improv Games in Chicago.?

One of the side effects of this combination of Big Personality and Insatiable Curiosity is I often find myself chatting it up with our Uber Drivers as we get about Austin. Some are stone-faced and focused on the drive (my social skills have evolved enough that I leave them be).

Most are open and happy to share their stories.

One thing I’ve discovered (that I wouldn’t have imagined) is the number of times the drivers tell me they either are currently sleeping in their cars (or have slept in their cars at some point in their Uber driving careers).??

One fellow who picked me up last week, explained that he drives from Laredo to Austin - a four-hour drive - weekly. His weekly goal is to make $1,600. His side of the app provides him with graphs and surge pricing so that he can be strategic and keep running totals of his earnings. (This is information I extrapolated from our conversation - if anyone in our community has been an Uber Driver and would like to share a deep dive on how the system works from the driver’s side, please do!)

Christopher sleeps in his car an average of four nights a week. He drives the wheels off when he is in Austin. He and his cohorts know where to go to avoid police scrutiny, and he has a gym membership for daily showers and hygiene. When the app indicates he has hit his target earnings, he drives back to Laredo to sleep in his own bed. This is his weekly “reward."?

Christopher is the father of eight children, some grown and on their own, others he is helping put through college. His education ended with a high school diploma. He told me he is happy with being a contract worker, happy to call his own hours, and pleased that he can help his children with their education.

There are a lot of hardworking folks in America.?

In the unlikely event that I run into Mark Zuckerberg in an elevator, I would love to discuss this headline. “Meta’s Zuckerberg Sees $28 Billion Windfall After Shares Rocket."

I believe Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, Jensen Huang, Michael Dell, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Steve Ballmer, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk also work very hard and very smart. I believe they should be richly rewarded for their ingenuity and the risks they have taken to grow magnificently successful companies.

I remain curious about how we as a nation view issues like taxation that would provide funding for education, transportation infrastructures, and healthcare.?

Do you have an opinion about these topics? (Hint, hint to my libertarian friends in Texas, with the last name Hoover)
