- The words of Edna Earl Ponder, the narrator of Eudora Welty's utterly hilarious and barely mentioned little book, The Ponder Heart.

This was the narrator's diagnosis of the comic plight of a small town in Mississippi in the 1940s or early 50s. And it may be our big problem now. This little statement is one of the few serious sentences from one of the very funniest books I've ever read in my whole entire life. Only 156 pages and I probably laughed out loud more than two dozen times. Do yourself a favor. Git it. Merry Christmas.
