The Big Missing Link for New Year’s Resolution & Goals

You don’t have to look far these days to see posts declaring New Year’s Resolutions, big bold plans, theme words, and intentions.?
I personally love the energy of turning the page on December 31st and creating from what feels like a blank canvas in 2023.
AND I also know from personal experience and coaching 1000s of people over the past 20 years that the biggest challenge going into the New Year is that YOU are the common denominator in achieving your goals.?
And that can be both a blessing and a curse. If you’ve been consistently knocking your goals out of the park it’s great news.?
But it’s pretty disheartening if there’s still one big area you know would make a huge difference to your life and business, yet it remains elusive.?
You probably tell yourself that you need to be more focused, more disciplined, and more consistent and those certainly have some merit to them but that’s still not the full story.?
You and I know both know people who are putting in the hours, and have a lot of discipline yet they’re still falling short and feeling frustrated. They may even be reading this post right now :)
As a practical example let’s imagine you want to double your business revenue in 2023. You’ve got all the compelling reasons why that would be a great goal to achieve. You feel excited about it and compile a list of all the activities you could focus on to make it happen. On paper it makes sense.?
But here’s the challenge - most goal-setting exercises focus on the WHAT and the WHY but they don’t focus on WHO.
AND by WHO I mean, WHO do you have to become in order to make this goal possible?
We’ve not been taught to think this way and it’s not helping us to advance. WHO we are being today is generating our current results so it makes sense that we have to become an upgraded or an expanded version of ourselves to achieve bigger results.?
Going back to my earlier example; if you’re a self-proclaimed people pleaser you may run into trouble when your kid’s PTA asks you to take on an extra role, or the non-profit you’re passionate about asks you to do some fundraising for them.?
In business, you could find it difficult to turn down work even though you know it’s not an ideal client and you also know you’re undercharging for your expertise. But all the time you carry the “title” of people pleaser - your actions will also be consistent with this and in turn, this will affect your results (and your stress levels!)?

AND this is where the real work begins of goal achievement.
Most people shy away from it because … it’s work and it’s not easy.?
You’ll get pushback from those around you.
You’ll question yourself.?
You’ll feel uncomfortable for sure.?
You’ll need to become a bigger version of you.?
And you’ll have to question whose dreams you’re really fulfilling - yours or somebody else’s??
On the other side though lies empowerment and personal freedom which, in my books, are always worth striving for.?
Would love to hear your thoughts on this.?
Agree? Disagree??
