A Big Lesson from a Little Bit

A Big Lesson from a Little Bit

A while back an American company developed a drill bit as a thin as a human hair. At the time, this was considered an amazing technological feat. The company introduced its amazing drill bit all over the world, and it sent samples to Germany, Russia, and Japan.

The Russians didn’t respond, no doubt due to the fall of communism and other more pressing matters.

The Germans were extremely interested. Their response: Send all the information you can. How did you develop this? What are the applications? How could this bit be used in our marketplace?

The Japanese simply mailed the drill bit back with a hole drilled through it! They had been quietly developing an even greater, more precise technology.

The point is, no matter how great or perfect we might think we are, there is always room for improvement. We might say to ourselves, “I don’t want to put the effort into improving my life. It’s fine just the way it is.”

But for how long? Without a focus on improvement, we are only capable of handling the same types of challenges that life has already given us. People who want to stretch themselves, train for upcoming and unexpected challenges maintaining their fitness for life’s adventures.

And what about people who have a my-life-is-fine-just-the-way-it-is attitude? They’re going to have to grow and face life’s unexpected challenges anyway. Unfortunately, being forced to grow is generally more painful than choosing to grow.
