Big Increases for Vital Department of Labor and Education Grants

On June 30th, 2022, the House Appropriations Committee approved the FY23 allocations for the Department of Education and Department of Labor. Labor will receive $15 billion in discretionary appropriations, a $1.9 billion increase over 2022. Education will receive $86.7 billion, a $10.3 billion increase over 2022.

The stated purpose of these allocations for Labor and Education is to:

  • “Create and sustain good-paying American jobs through investments in job training, apprenticeship programs, and worker protection”
  • “Grow opportunity with major investments in education, including significant funding for high-poverty schools and students with disabilities, and strong increases for programs that expand access to post-secondary education”

Significant increases pertinent to educators, workforce development, and CTE programs include:

Labor

  • $3.1 billion for?Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act State Grants, an increase of $256 million above the FY 2022
  • $303 million for?Registered Apprenticeships, an increase of $68 million above the FY 2022
  • $100 million for Strengthening Community College Training Grants, an increase of $50 million above the FY2022

Education

  • $1.4 billion for?CTE State Grants (Perkins Basic State Grants), an increase of $45 million above the FY 2022 enacted level
