Big goals – What are they really?

Big goals – What are they really?

What are big goals and what are ordinary goals? Firstly, I will say that any goal is good because it gives us focus and helps us work towards a future that we have crafted.

Is it not also true though that we are, if we are serious about growth, whether personal or professional, always setting ourselves goals in some shape or other?

We may set ourselves goals which look like;

  1. I want to grow my business.
  2. I want to run a marathon.
  3. I want to be the best at…
  4. I want to spend more time with the family.
  5. I want to eat more healthily.
  6. I want to be happier.
  7. I want to make more money.
  8. I want to grow my team.

All good goals, but are they big goals? I would suggest not. These are ordinary goals, not because they are any less valuable, but because once achieved, we have to go on and set another goal, and another, and another.

When I’m working with clients, we work on a 5 year vision, 3 year goals and a 1 year plan. This brings real focus and builds traction and momentum, they and it are ever evolving and growing towards their big goals.

A big goal, or BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) as is often quoted, is a goal that changes our lives, something that, once achieved, will mean that we can and will move on to the next chapter in our lives.

For many we say that achieving our goals is down to willpower, however… Big goals negate the need for willpower because the excitement of the dream goal drives us into action.

When we live every single day with a vision in our minds of the actuality of that dream, we are so busy moving towards our big goal and chasing what we believe is possible that we just don’t have time for fear, blame and thoughts that hold us back.

My goal is to be happy in whatever I do. I lost my husband 7 years ago and I strive to be happy and help other people on my journey wherever I can.

I want to make sure that no empty printer cartridge ever goes into landfill or incineration ever. I want every single one of them to be re-used or recycled. We won't stop working on this until it's done.

My big goal would be to be able to create more time for myself and the people I love! It’s as simple as that - how I go about doing that... Well that’s what the next few years of hard work and determination are about ??
