The Big Five Aspect Scale

The Big Five Aspect Scale

This week I tried 'The Big Five Aspect Scale' which is a comprehensive, open-source 100-item personality measure. This test generates a report at the end which doesn't just cover the big five dimensions but also aspects within them. In the end you receive a comprehensive report about your personality covers 15 aspects. Here's a video where Dr. Peterson describes how this test works.

It is a comparison of thousands of people of diverse age, race and sex, so that you know exactly where you stand in relationship to others in personality traits.

Dimensions

As defined on the understand myself website , You will receive information about your position along each of the Big Five dimensions of:

  • Extraversion (associated with positive emotion)

Enthusiasm (spontaneous joy and engagement) and Assertiveness (social dominance, often verbal in nature)?

  • Neuroticism (negative emotion)

Withdrawal (the tendency to avoid in the face of uncertainty) Volatility (the tendency to become irritable and upset when things go wrong)?

  • Agreeableness (the primary dimension of care for others)

Compassion (the tendency to empathically experience the emotion of others) and Politeness (the proclivity to abide by interpersonal norms)?

  • Conscientiousness (associated with duty, precision and responsibility)

Industriousness (the ability to engage in sustained, goal-directed effort) Orderliness (the tendency to schedule, organize and systematize)?

  • Openness (interest in ideas and aesthetics)

Openness (creativity and aesthetic sensitivity) and Intellect (interest in abstract concepts and ideas)?

Why the Big Five?

This is the most comprehensive study of personality backed by research and generates an incredibly useful and insightful report. It is important that while you are taking the test you answer for how you actually are and not how you wish you would like to be.

The results help us understand that human personality is not straightforward. The selection of traits and where we are on the scale across the board determine how we are in situations. Self-awareness is the first step in a journey to understand others around us, or perhaps attempting to understand. One thing to be aware of is that the results might not be what you necessarily want to find out about yourself, but at least you would know them.

I would highly recommend this 15 min exercise for people. Here's a link if you wish to try it: https://www.understandmyself.com/personality-assessment

Happy discovering!
