Big Fall Books I'm Excited About
One occupational hazard of being a bookseller is that I often find myself avoiding big books - books everyone's buzzing about, books from famous authors, award contenders. It’s not because I’m being snooty, I swear!?
The real reason is that these books tend to sell themselves. I don’t need to read them.
As an indie bookseller I reason my time is better spent searching out books not in the spotlight. BUT. It means I miss out. Am I the only person left who hasn’t read Demon Copperhead? (It’s out in paperback this week, by the way.)
But as we head into the busiest season in publishing, I am glad to say I’ve actually been brushing up on what’s going to be big in literary fiction:?
I read and loved Elizabeth Strout’s Tell Me Everthing (out September 10th), Sally Rooney’s Intermezzo (out September 24th), and Louise Erdrich’s The Mighty Red (out October 1st). Masterful, moving, experts at their crafts - these are books you’ll see everywhere, and for good reason. I’m happy to have enjoyed them, rather than avoided them.?
On the “big books” in nonfiction front, I’ve started reading Ina Garten’s memoir Be Ready When Lucky Happens (out October 1st) and I’m planning to one-sit read the new Robin Wall Kimmerer The Serviceberry (out November 19th) this weekend.?
I’ll get back to my under-the-radar reading habits soon, but it was fun to see what all the fuss is about with these big books. I recommend you do the same.?

6 个月I love hearing about what others are excited to read this fall! It’s always inspiring to see the diversity in choices, and I appreciate you sharing your favorites. While I agree that picking good books is essential, I think it's also valuable to consider how we approach our reading lists. For instance, rather than focusing solely on new releases, exploring themes or genres that resonate with us can enhance our reading experience. Last fall, I discovered several classic novels that deepened my understanding of contemporary issues, proving that older works can still be incredibly relevant. Additionally, creating a mix of fiction and nonfiction can help balance perspectives and spark new ideas. I often find that alternating between genres not only keeps my reading fresh but also allows me to reflect more deeply on what I read. I recently read a summary that provided fascinating insights on effective reading habits that might resonate with you as well. You can find it here: notion.habit10x.com/AH007 #wxdv
