Not a Big Data project; massive citizen science

Have you also reached the point where “Big Data” barely makes you enthusiastic anymore? How does “Massive Qualitative Science” tickle your fancy? Or “Open Citizen Science”? That still gets my heart rate pumping and that is why I am so crazy about a project by Sociology professor Christian Br?er, Crowd Findings. Ideas are overflowing, but we are looking for a programmer and user interface designer to join us in this quest to take us one step further and make ideas reality.
If you have read up to this point, the jargon has not fazed you. Great! That’s what we need. Because this project will challenge and stretch your concepts of how things get done, welcoming the unknown. This project has the potential to redefine how qualitative research methodology is executed, besides extracting it from the constraints of academia and bringing it to the masses (yes I dared use that expression).
Goal of this project is to build a tool/platform which will facilitate open collaborative qualitative research, from data gathering to coding and the most exciting part, to drawing research conclusions together in an open and collaborative fashion. So if you are looking for a challenge, and have an idea how to design for collaborative processes of 500+ people online… we are looking for you! If you know someone who might be interested, please forward this post. And if you want to get rich off of this project, it will be mostly rich in inspiration and ideas, we are still a public organization after all...
If you want to receive more information or express your interest in collaborating with us on this project, please let us know at: crowdfindings /at/ uva.nl

9 年Hi Nynke, Nice initiative. As you might know (or not?) we have been working on a tool that allows for systemic collection of qualitative information (stories) that leads to quantitative data, using a "meaning mapper" framework. Look at www.sprockler.com. We have been testing it small-scale over the past months and it looks very promising. We are also looking ar possibilities for democratic sense making (much better than a yes/no referendum !!!). We have a Dutch/Czech team that has been doing the technicalities. Let me know if you want to link up! groet, Han

9 年This sounds really interesting and exciting :) I am conducting qual research in a team of 5 using off-the-shelf software. This is already quite challenging.. :P
Very good!

9 年Big Data does not make me enthusiastic, but big questions do ;-)
