Big Data
Knowing and using a new, powerful tool or feature can feel like an unfair advantage. I remember the first moment I had a business with a viral video.. that feeling that "I can get all this attention... without spending on ads?!?". I remember plugging in Liverecover for the first time and watching my abandoned cart conversion skyrocket... same with that first moment when I saw an email automation generate five figures.
That feeling comes less and less as businesses scale. Things become more complex, silver bullets don't exist in the same way. The reliable way is process, iteration and bold strategy, and those things are complex and relentless to execute on.
I got a demo of a software platform called Particl a few weeks ago and felt that same feeling I describe above. I could pull up ecommerce stores and see exactly what their top products were-- which ones drove volume, which ones drove revenue, sizing breakdowns by SKU. As someone who works a lot in fashion products all of a sudden I could see what competitors sleeper major products were -- the silent SKUs just moving massive units while more showy products get the social media attention. Seasonality, variants, price changes, monitoring lists.
I've been talking a lot with close entrepreneur friends about massive opportunities. The kind of businesses you need to position yourself around silently, but not dip your toe in, instead launch with full firepower, massive inventory, a war chest big enough to establish a leading brand and build a moat with distribution and marketing others can enter.
As I've spent more time in the last year on strategy and analysis versus operations I've begun to find more of these ideas pulling in my head. I search, I check the aggregators, I triple check if theres REALLY no one doing this.
And as some of these bets get made, it's almost shocking that you can go into it with an intimate knowledge of category competitors. You can invest in inventory knowing complete size breakdowns and full revenue mixes from Particl, and having competitors suppliers from Import Yeti or Panjiva, a complete idea of successful ad strategies in someone's niche using Facebook's transparency tool.
There's never been a better time to act.
