Big Changes Ahead for D365FO Deployments: What You Need to Know

Exciting news for the Dynamics 365 community! Starting February 1, 2025, all new sandbox and production deployments in Lifecycle Services (LCS) will require Dataverse integration. This is a major step forward in aligning D365 ERP apps with the Power Platform ecosystem, ensuring seamless integration and expanded functionality.

So, what does this mean for us as professionals working with D365FO?

The Why Behind the Change:

Microsoft is making Dataverse mandatory to bridge the gap between ERP apps and the Power Platform admin center. This ensures a unified platform for app development, data management, and integration capabilities.

Key Impacts on Organizations:

  1. Licensing and Permissions: Deployments in LCS will require users to have appropriate licensing (e.g., Finance, SCM, or Commerce) in the tenant owning the LCS project. You'll also need permissions to manage or create Dataverse environments.
  2. Storage Requirements: Dataverse integration will consume additional storage. But here’s the good news: Microsoft is adding 3GB of Dataverse capacity per sandbox and production environment to ease this transition.
  3. Deployment Steps: Power Platform Integration will now be a must-have configuration when setting up new environments. For those already using Power Platform, you can link your existing environment to streamline the process.

How to Prepare:

If you’re not already leveraging Dataverse in your deployments, now’s the time to start planning! Begin by evaluating your organization’s licensing, permissions, and storage capacity. For teams already using Power Platform, the transition will likely be smoother.

My Take:

This update underscores Microsoft’s push for deeper integration across the D365 ecosystem. While there are challenges, such as ensuring sufficient Dataverse storage, the opportunities for enhanced functionality and scalability are immense. For businesses, this means a future-proof platform that’s better aligned with modern application and data strategies.
