The importance of international action increased as record year for cyber attacks in 2020, with a 50% increase in data breaches compared to 2019. This increase is not set to stop. IT Governance reported that during January 2023 277.6 Million?records were breached.

A data breach is considered harmful because it results in the exposure of personal information of both customers and businesses, which can lead to identity theft, intellectual property theft, and various other adverse impacts.

"The World must take a holistic approach to cybersecurity," says the head of the World Economic Forum 's Global Centre for Cybersecurity.

Big Breaches

We take a look back at some of the big breaches we have reported on:

1. During October 2022, a ransomware attack on a medical laboratory firm caused a significant data breach leading to the compromise of 9.9 million records, as reported by IT Governance Ltd , which also provided guidance for individuals and organisations to safeguard their data against cyber threats. 2. Between January 2020 and March 2021 HM Revenue & Customs reported 17 serious data breaches to the ICO, potentially affecting a total of 3,017 individuals, according to their Annual Report and Accounts. Read more
3. August 2021 T-Mobile confirmed a data breach that resulted in personal information being stolen. The breach affected roughly 2 million customers, and the stolen data included names, dates of birth, social security numbers, and other sensitive personal information. Continue reading
4. Twitter has acknowledged that more than 5.4 million of its users' records, including non-public data, were stolen and subsequently repaired in January 2022. However, the records have now been made available free of charge on a hacker forum. Find out more in January's Magazine
