Big Aunty: An accessible re(view) by Sipho Eric Ndlovu
Big Aunty taught me that there are secrets kept so long they bury the living. With no one left to apologize to. If you have ever watched a piece of theatre which has spoken directly to your family dynamic you will know the impact such art can have on you. And if not, then with Big Aunty you know what to look forward to.
Arguably, namely a cast that can't be overcast. Three predominant voices that approach grief with traditions traced to a current Jamaican past. For the one night you will experience Nine-nights. But don't dare think it a party. H'enjoyment lives there along with communal grief.
The cast mourn, leaving the audience torn. Keiren leads us through a rendition harmouniasly carried of 'When Christ is Born'.
With a heavy heart it can be difficult to sing anyone's praises. But there's a care of the cast and a care of the audience which leaves no-one alone or anyone hungry, I presume as Big Aunty would have it.
