Big Apple Handball: Setting the Stage for Future Champions

From Intense Battles to Unforgettable Moments, the Road to Cairo Shined Bright in NJIT

Ladies and gentlemen, what we just witnessed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology was nothing short of spectacular! We at the New York City Team Handball Club pulled out all the stops to host a mind-blowing NACHC qualifier for the International Handball Federation Men’s Club World Championship, and let me tell you, it was a rollercoaster of emotions, intensity, and pure handball passion!

First off, let’s give a standing ovation to our partners: USA Team Handball , North American and Caribbean Handball Confederation, IHF, and NJIT. Without their support, this event wouldn't have reached the monumental heights it did. And to the tireless volunteers – you all are the unsung heroes who made this event shine brighter than the New York skyline!

We had four phenomenal teams locking horns in a battle for the ages: California Eagles, Los Angeles THC, Kraken from Mexico, and of course, us, the host New York City Team Handball Club. These teams brought the heat, the skill, and the unforgettable moments that define top-tier amateur handball competition.

The stage was set at the NJIT, and what a stage it was! World-class facilities, impeccable reception, and the convenience of Newark Airport nearby. NJIT's rich international diversity and stellar STEM facilities provided the perfect backdrop for a tournament of this magnitude.

Now, let’s dive into the action! The first two days had every team finishing with one win and one loss, setting up a nail-biting final day of group stage matches. Kraken from Mexico faced off against the California Eagles, and folks, it was a masterclass in dominance as the Eagles soared to secure their spot in the finals.

The second match – Los Angeles THC versus New York City THC – was an absolute barnburner! These two titans of the court know each other inside out, but we turned up the heat, pulling away in the second half to earn our rightful place in the finals.

In the battle for third place, Los Angeles THC and Kraken delivered a thriller that went into double overtime and ended in a dramatic penalty shootout. Los Angeles THC's precise shooting clinched them third place in a nail-biting finish.

Each match had its MVP, and these standout performers walked away with Lewis Howes's NY Times bestselling book, "The Greatness Mindset." A fitting reward for their greatness on the court!

And then, the grand finale. New York City Team Handball Club had the home crowd roaring as we faced the formidable California Eagles for the fourth time in recent months. We started strong, racing to a 4-5 goal lead, but the Eagles, with their seasoned precision, clawed back to lead by one at halftime, 11:12.

The second half saw the Eagles doing what they do best – maintaining a steady 3-4 goal lead, demonstrating their patience, precision, and championship mettle. They earned their ticket to Cairo, Egypt, for the IHF Club World Championship with a performance that left everyone in awe. We congratulate them and wish them good luck.

As the dust settles and the cheers fade, we reflect on what this tournament truly meant. It was more than just a series of games; it was a celebration of our sport, our community, and our shared love for handball. We might not have taken home the trophy, but as hosts, we couldn’t be prouder. We showcased the spirit, talent, and passion that define our club and this incredible sport.
