The BIED Society is growing in 2022!

In 2022, the BIED Society has added 16 new Centers to their well known National Security and International Affairs activities over the last 8 years. While we are sad about the pandemic and all the concerns that come with a global emergency, the BIED Society had registered several online fully virtual internship programs. When COVID hit and the U.S. government shut down most government buildings to non essential and interns. There were few options to accommodate the countries juniors and seniors to gain professional training in many international affairs professions. We worked hard to make room for hundreds of students and trained new international affairs topics that we traditionally did not cover. Our partnership with The Washington Center , allows undergraduate students to get college credit, come to Washington D.C. and learn about complex policy issues through an International Affairs Think Tank perspective. The internship is research heavy and many of our students use the semester to find their specialization. It is often a students first time getting to research anything they want, as most college courses are prescribed. This freedom allows many to explore their passion and pinpoint an area of specialty they can be excited about. Our internship program has about 20-30% graduate students in it. This is because many students, even though they have graduated from undergraduate school still do not know what direction they want to pursue. This internship program is exactly what they need to find their way.

The BIED Society moved to a non profit 501(c)3 status this year with the creation of the BIED Global Leadership Academy. This organization now has twenty well defined curriculum in the following Centers.

We have a Fellowship program which is designed to promote a scholar's writing ability, after researching and analyzing information, the pinnacle of any successful career in International Affairs should be publishing in a peer reviewed journal and all the preparation and positive and/or negative review that comes with any scientific process. Our Fellowship program allows a professional to research in their area of passion to explore the field and publish three journal quality articles in one year. This starts with creating a publishing plan and backward planning your activities for the year to successfully accomplish your writing. Our Fellows also attend (in person or remotely) three professional International Affairs Conferences in the Washington D.C. area to present their hard work. This allows them to network in their field and explore adjacent disciplines as well. Many are not regularly in the Washington D.C. area, so coming to the District allows them to gain government contacts and to meet key human relations recruiters from the Federal government, private sector, and many non profit or International Organizations.

The Fellowship Program is a year commitment, but most members find that the work they are doing is dramatically helping grow their skill set and they see their hard work positively impact their careers. They decide to continue as a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year Fellow to keep the momentum, knowing it takes years to actually become an expert or specialist. In year two we focus on Grant writing and in year three we focus again on writing, but in text book writing. That's right, many young professionals if they show promise are asked to research and define a piece of your discipline through writing a chapter in a book or co-authoring a chapter. An example would be a book we are working on now about the U.S. Foreign Service, but not just the State Department, but the Commerce Department, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Agency for International Development. We explore the Foreign Service Officer Test, the oral assessment, the resume heavy USAID process, etc. Focusing on different types of writing helps build stronger professionals.

We are non partisan which many members find refreshing in today's environment. We focus on issues overseas and the traditional political noise does not translate to foreign dynamics. This allows our researchers and fellows to focus on what is working and why.

On October 22 & 23 the BIED Society will be hosting our first Conference since COVID. We welcome those undergraduate students, graduate students, and young professionals to reach out to learn more about our #internship & #fellowship opportunities. In our Autumn Conference we take time to attend one of the premier events in Northern Virginia, the Virginia's Gold Cup Steeplechase horse race. It's always a fun and posh event, helping young professionals to get out of the city from time to time and enjoy wine & horse country.

For our mid career and senior level researchers, #phd 's, #postdocs, and seasoned professionals, like all professional associations we have opportunities to sharpen your skills and network beyond your Universities, Non Profits, or government agencies. We have a premier publication that is called the Behavioral International Economic Development Global Comparative Journal. It has the requirement to write on a key international policy topic but cover at least three countries of International Organizations. We extend the length for this journal to 20 pages in APA style to compare and contrast policy options for complex topics. Many find this a rewarding exercise and our readers find value in considering policy alternatives in the #policy writing and #policymanagement implementation communities.

Kenneth T. Davis, PhD ?? has attracted an all star team and has pin pointed what students want, what young professionals are looking for, and found great options for mid & senior Policy professionals. The BIED Society knows senior professionals have less time while students have much more time. With this in mind, we offer 3 study abroad opportunities to help you write and then present your Global Comparative papers. We have a Spain, France, and Rome cruise scheduled in the coming year and look forward to meeting many new professionals through our Policy Commission Program. This is a PhD level opportunity, getting some of the brightest minds together to talk about policy alternatives. This is essential in fields like Space, Defense Innovation, or Artificial Intelligence where things are changing so fast its hard to keep track. Finally, our name indicates that we are a Society, and a positive one we are. We have built a great group of jr., mid, and senior professionals that want to help each other out, mentor, guide, and ultimately help build better policies through building better professionals.

Our website will have a major facelift soon, kindly go to www.biedsociety.com to learn more. We are taking applications now for all programs and if you are a professional in any #internationalaffairs field, we want to meet you.
