- White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday said that outgoing US Pres. Joe Biden will attend the inauguration of his successor next year regardless of whether Democratic Vice Pres. Kamala Harris or Republican former Pres. Donald Trump wins the election.[1][2]
- Jean-Pierre added that Biden "believes in the peaceful transfer of power" and that attending the inauguration is "not about him" but rather "what the American people need to see."[3]
- This comes as Biden — who stepped out of the presidential race and was replaced by Kamala Harris atop the Democratic ticket — suggested in August that he would attend a possible Trump inauguration next year, claiming to "have good manners, not like [Trump]."[4][5]
- Trump didn't attend Biden's inauguration in 2021, breaking a tradition of outgoing presidents attending the swearing-in of their successors and joining John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Johnson, who skipped inaugurations in the 1800s.[2][6]
- The 60th Presidential Inauguration is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2025, and has been designated as a National Special Security Event — meaning that the US Secret Service leads the "design and implementation of the operational security plan."[7][8]
This proves Democrats support a peaceful transfer of power regardless of who wins. Meanwhile, Republicans have been indicating they again won't accept election results if Trump loses.
Biden may be trying to ease tensions ahead of Election Day, but other Democrats are quietly planning to block Trump from returning to the White House. There's no doubt Democrats will challenge the election if Trump wins.
