On October 17, 2023, the Gateway Chapter of the? Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International—Ghana ( FGBMFI -Ghana)? was honoured to have the National President, Mr Emmanuel Baba Mahama, address the chapter as part of a three-week leadership series, specifically focusing on "The Ethical Imperative of Authentic Leadership."
?During his presentation, the National President chose to highlight the story of Rebekah from the book of Genesis, specifically Chapter 24. He used Rebekah's story as a case study to illustrate the importance of having a servant's heart in leadership. Rebekah's willingness to go above and beyond by offering to draw water for Abraham's servant and his ten famished camels was a powerful example of selfless service.
?The National President emphasised genuine service's frequently overlooked and selfless nature. In today's society, self-centeredness and individual advantage often hold sway, so it becomes imperative to contemplate the significant influence that acts of service can exert on others. Rebekah's actions struck a deep chord with me, offering a meaningful point of self-examination in my leadership endeavours.
?In addition to Rebekah's story, the presentation also drew my attention to a scriptural passage from Hebrews 12:1 that says, "Therefore, since such a great cloud of witnesses surrounds us, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."
?The concept of service and the selflessness it often entails are profound. It requires individuals to put aside their desires and ambitions to serve others. This act of selflessness is not always easy, but it is essential to authentic leadership.
?In the pages of the Bible ( Genesis 24), we encounter remarkable individuals whose lives and actions continue to inspire and guide us. Rebekah is a shining example of a heart devoted to service. Her selflessness, kindness, and willingness to go the extra mile have valuable lessons for leaders and individuals seeking to make a difference today.
?The story of Rebekah's encounter with Abraham's servant paints a vivid picture of her extraordinary act of service. As the servant sought a suitable wife for Isaac, he devised a test at the well, which required a young woman to offer him a drink and draw water for his ten camels. Rebekah, displaying her graciousness and servant's heart, willingly accepted the challenge.
?What makes Rebekah's service so remarkable is the sheer magnitude of the task. Quenching the thirst of ten camels was a formidable task, as each thirsty camel could consume around 30 gallons of water in one go. This meant a staggering total of 300 gallons of water had to be provided. Rebekah's resolute character and unwavering determination made her more than capable of meeting this challenge. She filled her water jar, tirelessly ascended and descended the well's steps, and repeated this arduous process an astonishing 60 times or more. Her actions showcased physical strength and a heart ready to serve others, even strangers who hailed from a distant land.
Rebekah's story holds several valuable lessons for leaders and individuals seeking to positively impact their communities and organizations in today's contemporary world.

?Firstly, Rebekah's willingness to serve a needy stranger showcases the importance of selflessness. True leaders prioritize the needs of others over their interests. In a world where personal gain often takes precedence, Rebekah's example reminds us of the power of selflessness in building strong relationships and communities.
?Secondly, Rebekah's act was driven by kindness and hospitality. Leaders should cultivate an environment of warmth and empathy in their organizations, making people feel welcomed and valued. By prioritizing kindness and hospitality, leaders can create a sense of belonging and foster a culture of collaboration and support.
?Furthermore, Rebekah's commitment to serving went beyond what was expected. Leaders should not merely meet the minimum requirements but aim to exceed expectations in their service to others. Going the extra mile demonstrates dedication and a genuine desire to make a difference. Leaders can inspire others to do the same through these acts of going above and beyond.
?Rebekah's physical strength and determination are qualities that leaders should possess. In the face of challenges, leaders should be resolute and unwavering. Strength and resilience are essential for navigating difficult situations and leading others through adversity. Rebekah's story serves as a reminder that leaders must be prepared to face challenges head-on and persevere in their pursuit of service.
?Finally, Rebekah's story is a classic example of servant leadership. Max DePree states, "The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant."Leaders should see themselves as servants first, leading by example and serving the needs of their teams. By embodying the qualities of a servant leader, such as humility, empathy, and a commitment to service, leaders can create an environment where individuals feel supported, empowered, and motivated to contribute their best.
?Moreover, Rebekah's story highlights the critical role that empathy and compassion play in effective leadership. By putting herself in the shoes of those she sought to help, Rebekah connected with them on a deeper level and built trust and rapport. This allowed her to create meaningful change that had a lasting impact on the lives of those she touched.
?In conclusion, Rebekah's remarkable service at the well is an enduring example of a heart devoted to serving others. Her selflessness, kindness, and willingness to go the extra mile should inspire leaders and individuals to lead with compassion and commitment. In a world where service is often overshadowed by personal gain, Rebekah's story reminds us of the profound impact of selfless acts on our lives and our roles as leaders. Let us strive to follow in Rebekah's footsteps and make a difference in the lives of others through acts of selfless service.
