??CHAPTER 49
Josiah and the Prophets*
1?The name Josiah is like blended incense,
made lasting by a skilled perfumer.a
Precious is his memory, like honey to the taste,
like music at a banquet.
2?For he grieved over our betrayals,
and destroyed the abominable idols.
3?He kept his heart fixed on God,
and in times of lawlessness practiced virtue.
4?Except for David, Hezekiah, and Josiah,
they all were wicked;
They abandoned the Law of the Most High,
these kings of Judah, right to the very end.
5?So he gave over their power to others,
their glory to a foreign nation
6?Who burned the holy city
and left its streets desolate,
7?As foretold by Jeremiah.b They mistreated him
who even in the womb had been made a prophet,
To root out, pull down, and destroy,
and then to build and to plant.c
8?Ezekiel beheld a vision
and described the different creatures of the chariot;d
9?He also referred to Job,
who always persevered in the right path.e
10?Then, too, the Twelve Prophets—
may their bones flourish with new life where they lie!—
They gave new strength to Jacob
and saved him with steadfast hope.
The Heroes After the Exile
11?How to extol Zerubbabel?*
He was like a signet ring on the right hand,f
12?And Jeshua, Jozadak’s son?
In their time they rebuilt the altar
And erected the holy temple,
destined for everlasting glory.
13?Exalted be the memory of Nehemiah!
He rebuilt our ruined walls,
Restored our shattered defenses,
and set up gates and bars.g
The Earliest Patriarchs
14?Few on earth have been created like Enoch;*
he also was taken up bodily.h
15?Was ever a man born like Joseph?
Even his dead body was provided for.i
16?Glorious, too, were Shem and Seth and Enosh;
but beyond that of any living being was the splendor of Adam.j 1
? Ben Sira’s praise of King Josiah (vv. 1–3) and of the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel and the minor prophets (vv. 7–10) derives from their spirit of fidelity to the Lord and his Law (vv. 4–6, 10).

The author of Sirach is self identified in Sirach 50:27 "Instruction in understanding and knowledge I have written in this book, Jesus son of Eleazar son of Sirach of Jerusalem, whose mind poured forth wisdom." But most know him by his common name as Ben Sira. His grandson transcribes the book from Hebrews to Greek.

Sirach is believed to be oral tradition of more than 30 years that the Grandson son transcribes. The original work by Ben Sira is believed to be completed around 180BC and the Grandson completing the transcription around 132 BC.

Structure

Sirach is written in several literary forms including proverbs, hymns, prayers, and teaching narratives, (almost like a parable).?We must keep these in mind when reading through Sirach.

We must also keep in mind that the text takes a gendered, heterosexual perspective regarding the acquisition and benefits of wisdom, which is feminine both in Hebrew (h.okma) and Greek (sophia). Sirach Sir 4:14?"Those who serve her minister to the Holy One; the Lord loves those who love her. Sir 4:15?Those who obey her will judge the nations, and all who listen to her will live secure." Both occupations described, the priest and judge, belong to men in second century Palestine. Wisdom is also the mother whom teaches her sons how to prosper (Clifford 326). We must keep in mind that Ben Sira views the Holy Spirit, (Wisdom) in a feminine manner, with all the attributes of a Female, Gal 5:22?But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23?gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Gal 5:24?Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:25?If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Rom 8:1-12 !!!! This is the goal of Ben Sira that we walk by the Spirit!!!!
Sirach 49 is still dealing with Sirach 44, 45, 46, 47, 48. It is still explaining how to follow God as these men did, so me must know Sirach 44, 45, 46, 47, 48 to fully understand Sirach 49. So we must know what Sir 44 is all about before we can have a clue what 48 is about. Sirach 44 wants us to remember to pass on our inheritance to our Children, Deut6:4-8, Pro1:8, Pro4:1, that all our taught to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh, Gal5:16-26, Rom6:12-14, that all receive their full inheritance Rev20:1-6!!! Notice that Sir 45, 46, 47, 48, 49 take up on the theme telling us only of the most faithful men of the old testament.

Purpose
?
The over all purpose of Sirach is to demonstrate to Jews and Gentiles that wisdom comes from God and not Athens or Jerusalem. God is the source of all wisdom and God gives wisdom to all whom seek it, Jews and Gentiles alike. Col1:9!!!
