??CHAPTER 19
1?Whoever does this grows no richer;
those who waste the little they have will be stripped bare.
2?Wine and women make the heart lustful,
and the companion of prostitutes becomes reckless.a
3?Rottenness and worms will possess him,
and the reckless will be snatched away.b
4?Whoever trusts others too quickly has a shallow mind,
and those who sin wrong themselves.
The Proper Use of Speech*
5?Whoever gloats over evil will be destroyed,
6?and whoever repeats gossip has no sense.
7?Never repeat gossip,
and no one will reproach you.c
8?Tell nothing to friend or foe;
and unless it be a sin for you, do not reveal a thing.d
9?For someone may have heard you and watched you,
and in time come to hate you.
10?Let anything you hear die with you;
never fear, it will not make you burst!
11?Having heard something, the fool goes into labor,
like a woman giving birth to a child.
12?Like an arrow stuck in a fool’s thigh,
so is gossip in the belly of a fool.
13?Admonish your friend—he may not have done it;
and if he did, that he may not do it again.e
14?Admonish your neighbor—he may not have said it;
and if he did, that he may not say it again.
15?Admonish your friend—often it may be slander;
do not believe every story.
16?Then, too, a person can slip and not mean it;
who has not sinned with his tongue?f
17?Admonish your neighbor before you break with him;
and give due place to the Law of the Most High.? g
How to Recognize True Wisdom*
18 The fear of the Lord is the first step to be accepted [of him], and wisdom obtaineth his love.
19 The knowledge of the commandments of the Lord is the doctrine of life: and they that do things that please him shall receive the fruit of the tree of immortality.
20?All wisdom is fear of the Lord;
and in all wisdom, the observance of the Law.? h
22?The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom,
nor is there prudence in the counsel of sinners.
23?There is a shrewdness that is detestable,
while the fool may be free from sin.
24?Better are the God-fearing who have little understanding
than those of great intelligence who violate the Law.
25?There is a shrewdness keen but dishonest,
and there are those who are duplicitous to win a judgment.
26?There is the villain bowed in grief,
but full of deceit within.
27?He hides his face and pretends not to hear,
but when not observed, he will take advantage of you:

when he finds the right time he will do harm.

the sensible are recognized as such when first met.

? An excellent commentary on bearing false witness (Ex 20:16; Dt 5:20). Ben Sira speaks harshly about calumny, rash judgment, and detraction (vv. 5–7), and urges discreet silence (vv. 8–12). Justice requires that an accused neighbor be given a hearing, and charity urges fraternal correction; both together fulfill the law of the Most High (vv. 13–17); cf. Mt 7:1–2; 18:15–16.

The author of Sirach is self identified in Sirach 50:27 "Instruction in understanding and knowledge I have written in this book, Jesus son of Eleazar son of Sirach of Jerusalem, whose mind poured forth wisdom." But most know him by his common name as Ben Sira. His grandson transcribes the book from Hebrews to Greek.

Sirach is believed to be oral tradition of more than 30 years that the Grandson son transcribes. The original work by Ben Sira is believed to be completed around 180BC and the Grandson completing the transcription around 132 BC.

Structure

Sirach is written in several literary forms including proverbs, hymns, prayers, and teaching narratives, (almost like a parable).?We must keep these in mind when reading through Sirach.

We must also keep in mind that the text takes a gendered, heterosexual perspective regarding the acquisition and benefits of wisdom, which is feminine both in Hebrew (h.okma) and Greek (sophia). Sirach Sir 4:14?"Those who serve her minister to the Holy One; the Lord loves those who love her. Sir 4:15?Those who obey her will judge the nations, and all who listen to her will live secure." Both occupations described, the priest and judge, belong to men in second century Palestine. Wisdom is also the mother whom teaches her sons how to prosper (Clifford 326). We must keep in mind that Ben Sira views the Holy Spirit, (Wisdom) in a feminine manner, with all the attributes of a Female, Gal 5:22?But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23?gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Gal 5:24?Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:25?If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Rom 8:1-12 !!!! This is the goal of Ben Sira that we walk by the Spirit!!!!

The over all purpose of Sirach is to demonstrate to Jews and Gentiles that wisdom comes from God and not Athens or Jerusalem. God is the source of all wisdom and God gives wisdom to all whom seek it, Jews and Gentiles alike. Col1:9!!!
