??CHAPTER 15
1?Whoever fears the Lord will do this;
whoever is practiced in the Law will come to Wisdom.
2?She will meet him like a mother;
like a young bride she will receive him,
3?* She will feed him with the bread of learning,
and give him the water of understanding to drink.a
4?He will lean upon her and not fall;
he will trust in her and not be put to shame.
5?She will exalt him above his neighbors,
and in the assembly she will make him eloquent.
6?Joy and gladness he will find,
and an everlasting name he will inherit.b
7?The worthless will not attain her,
and the haughty will not behold her.
8?She is far from the impious;
liars never think of her.
9?* Praise is unseemly on the lips of sinners,
for it has not been allotted to them by God.
10?But praise is uttered by the mouth of the wise,
and its rightful owner teaches it.

11?Do not say: “It was God’s doing that I fell away,”
for what he hates he does not do.
12?Do not say: “He himself has led me astray,”
for he has no need of the wicked.c
13?Abominable wickedness the Lord hates
and he does not let it happen to those who fear him.
14?God in the beginning created human beings
and made them subject to their own free choice.d
15?If you choose, you can keep the commandments;
loyalty is doing the will of God.
16?Set before you are fire and water;
to whatever you choose, stretch out your hand.
17?Before everyone are life and death,
whichever they choose will be given them.e
18?Immense is the wisdom of the Lord;
mighty in power, he sees all things.
19?The eyes of God behold his works,
and he understands every human deed.f
20?He never commands anyone to sin,
nor shows leniency toward deceivers.* 1
? In this role reversal Woman Wisdom teaches, nourishes, supports, and protects the vulnerable man. For similar imagery cf. Prv 8:4–21, 34–35; 9:1–5; 31:10–31.

? Here Ben Sira links freedom of the will with human responsibility. God, who sees everything, is neither the cause nor the occasion of sin. We have the power to choose our behavior and we are responsible for both the good and the evil we do (vv. 15–17).

The author of Sirach is self identified in Sirach 50:27 "Instruction in understanding and knowledge I have written in this book, Jesus son of Eleazar son of Sirach of Jerusalem, whose mind poured forth wisdom." But most know him by his common name as Ben Sira. His grandson transcribes the book from Hebrews to Greek.

Sirach is believed to be oral tradition of more than 30 years that the Grandson son transcribes. The original work by Ben Sira is believed to be completed around 180BC and the Grandson completing the transcription around 132 BC.

Structure

Sirach is written in several literary forms including proverbs, hymns, prayers, and teaching narratives, (almost like a parable).?We must keep these in mind when reading through Sirach.

We must also keep in mind that the text takes a gendered, heterosexual perspective regarding the acquisition and benefits of wisdom, which is feminine both in Hebrew (h.okma) and Greek (sophia). Sirach Sir 4:14?"Those who serve her minister to the Holy One; the Lord loves those who love her. Sir 4:15?Those who obey her will judge the nations, and all who listen to her will live secure." Both occupations described, the priest and judge, belong to men in second century Palestine. Wisdom is also the mother whom teaches her sons how to prosper (Clifford 326). We must keep in mind that Ben Sira views the Holy Spirit, (Wisdom) in a feminine manner, with all the attributes of a Female, Gal 5:22?But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23?gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Gal 5:24?Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:25?If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Rom 8:1-12 !!!! This is the goal of Ben Sira that we walk by the Spirit!!!!

Purpose

The over all purpose of Sirach is to demonstrate to Jews and Gentiles that wisdom comes from God and not Athens or Jerusalem. God is the source of all wisdom and God gives wisdom to all whom seek it, Jews and Gentiles alike. Col1:9!!!
The purpose of Sir 15 is to teach Man, the (6th day), YHWH the Church, Qahal, Ecclesia, Gen 1:27-31, when You choose YHWH, Sir 10:19-31, Sir 15:11-20, John 1:1-5, John 3:15-18, John 3:36, YHWH fills you with Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge in all manner of workmanship, Sir 14:20-27, Sir 15:1-20, Isa 11:2, Eze 37:14, Col 1:9!!!!

Application
YHWH I choose You, I declare You as my Lord God, My Creator, My King, My everything, I am nothing with out You. Thank You for sending Jesus to save me of my sins and redeem me back to Your Body. Fill me YHWH with Your Light of Life that is the Holy Spirit, that is wisdom understanding and knowledge in all manner of workmanship.
