??CHAPTER 2
Trust in God
1?My child, when you come to serve the Lord,*
prepare yourself for trials.a
2?Be sincere of heart and steadfast,
and do not be impetuous in time of adversity.
3?Cling to him, do not leave him,
that you may prosper in your last days.
4?Accept whatever happens to you;
in periods of humiliation be patient.
5?For in fire gold is tested,
and the chosen, in the crucible of humiliation.b
6?Trust in God, and he will help you;
make your ways straight and hope in him.
7?You that fear the Lord, wait for his mercy,
do not stray lest you fall.
8?You that fear the Lord, trust in him,
and your reward will not be lost.
9?You that fear the Lord, hope for good things,
for lasting joy and mercy.
10?Consider the generations long past and see:
has anyone trusted in the Lord and been disappointed?
Has anyone persevered in his fear and been forsaken?
has anyone called upon him and been ignored?c
11?For the Lord is compassionate and merciful;
forgives sins and saves in time of trouble.
12?Woe to timid hearts and drooping hands,*
to the sinner who walks a double path!
13?Woe to the faint of heart! For they do not trust,
and therefore have no shelter!
14?Woe to you that have lost hope!
what will you do at the Lord’s visitation?
15?Those who fear the Lord do not disobey his words;
those who love him keep his ways.d
16?Those who fear the Lord seek to please him;
those who love him are filled with his law.
17?Those who fear the Lord prepare their hearts
and humble themselves before him.
18?Let us fall into the hands of the Lord
and not into the hands of mortals,
For equal to his majesty is his mercy;
and equal to his name are his works.e 1
? Serving the Lord is not without its trials (v. 1); but no matter what happens, the genuine believer will remain sincere, steadfast, and faithful (vv. 2–3). Misfortune and humiliation are means of purification to prove one’s worth (vv. 4–5). Ben Sira believed that patience and unwavering trust in God are ultimately rewarded with the benefits of God’s mercy and of lasting joy (vv. 6–11).
a?a 2?Tm 3:10–12.

? A stern warning to those who compromise their faith in time of affliction; they fail in courage and trust and therefore have no security (vv. 12–14). But those who fear the Lord through obedience, reverence, love, and humility find his “mercy equal to his majesty” (vv. 15–18).

Revelation From God
?
Author
?
The author of Sirach is self identified in Sirach 50:27 "Instruction in understanding and knowledge I have written in this book, Jesus son of Eleazar son of Sirach of Jerusalem, whose mind poured forth wisdom." But most know him by his common name as Ben Sira. His grandson transcribes the book from Hebrews to Greek.
?
Date
?
Sirach is believed to be oral tradition of more than 30 years that the Grandson son transcribes. The original work by Ben Sira is believed to be completed around 180BC and the Grandson completing the transcription around 132 BC.
?
Structure
?
Sirach is written in several literary forms including proverbs, hymns, prayers, and teaching narratives, (almost like a parable).?We must keep these in mind when reading through Sirach.
?
We must also keep in mind that the text takes a gendered, heterosexual perspective regarding the acquisition and benefits of wisdom, which is feminine both in Hebrew (h.okma) and Greek (sophia). Sirach Sir 4:14?"Those who serve her minister to the Holy One; the Lord loves those who love her. Sir 4:15?Those who obey her will judge the nations, and all who listen to her will live secure." Both occupations described, the priest and judge, belong to men in second century Palestine. Wisdom is also the mother whom teaches her sons how to prosper (Clifford 326). We must keep in mind that Ben Sira views the Holy Spirit, (Wisdom) in a feminine manner, with all the attributes of a Female, Gal 5:22?But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23?gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Gal 5:24?Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:25?If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Rom 8:1-12 !!!! This is the goal of Ben Sira that we walk by the Spirit!!!!
?
Sirach 1 is a Hymn and was probably written by Ben Sira's Grandson. it is 29 verses long and has 7 pericopes, pointing the reader to the God of all creation and his perfectness in creating all things. On the 7th day God rested after 6 days to creating all things.
