??Chapter 4

The Evils of Oppression

1?Then I looked again at all the acts of a oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold, I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had b no one to comfort them; and power was on the side of their oppressors, but they had no one to comfort them. 2 So a I congratulated the dead who are already dead, more than the living who are still living. 3 But a better off than both of them is the one who has never existed, who has never seen the evil activity that is done under the sun.

4?I have seen that every labor and every a skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a person and his neighbor. This too is b futility and striving after wind. 5 The fool a folds his hands and b consumes his own flesh. 6 One hand full of rest is a better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind.

7?Then I looked again at futility under the sun. 8 There was a man without a 1 dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, a his eyes were not satisfied with riches, and he never asked, “And b for whom do I labor and deprive myself of pleasure?” This too is futility, and it is an c unhappy task.

9?Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor; 10 for if 1 either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not 2 another to lift him up! 11 Furthermore, if two lie down together they 1 keep warm, but a how can one be warm alone? 12 And if 1 one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.

13?A a poor yet wise youth is better than an old and foolish king who no longer knows how to receive 1 instruction—14 for he has come a out of prison to become king, even though he was born poor in his kingdom. 15 I have seen all those living under the sun move to the side of the second youth who 1 replaces him. 16 There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them. Even the ones who will come later will not be happy with him; for this too is a futility and striving after wind. 1

Revelation From God

Author

The author of Ecclesiastes identified himself, in Hebrew, as Qo?helet? (Ecc 1:1-2, Ecc 1:12, Ecc7:27, Ecc 12:8-10). Though this is sometimes treated as a proper name and hence transliterated, the presence of the article on the Hebrew word in Ecc 12:8 (and probably also in Ecc 7:27) shows that it is a title. The Old Testament uses this title of no other person. Nor is the form of the verb from which the title is derived used elsewhere. Therefore the exact meaning of this term is in doubt. Suggestions for its significance are generally drawn from the related Hebrew noun "assembly." For example, the Septuagint entitles the book Ekkle?siaste?s ("one who calls an assembly"), whence the English word "Ecclesiastes." Several English versions of the Bible translate Qo?helet? in relation to the function he supposedly played in the assembly (e.g., "The Teacher," NIV; "The Preacher," KJV; "The Leader of the Assembly," NIV marg.).

The author also identified himself as a "son of David" (Ecc 1:1), a "king in Jerusalem" (Ecc 1:1), and "king over Israel in Jerusalem" (Ecc1:12). Moreover, in the autobiographical section (Ecc 1:12-2:26) he said he was wiser "than anyone who [had] ruled over Jerusalem before" him (Ecc 1:16); that he was a builder of great projects (Ecc2:4-6); and that he possessed numerous slaves (Ecc 2:7), incomparable herds of sheep and cattle (Ecc 2:7), great wealth (Ecc_2:8), and a large harem (Ecc 2:8). In short he claimed to be greater than anyone who lived in Jerusalem before him (Ecc 2:9). These descriptions have led many Jewish and Christian interpreters to identify the author as Solomon though his name is never explicitly used in the book. This is according to the Bible Knowledge Commentary.
