To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.
1? a Have mercy upon me, O God, a according to thy lovingkindness:
According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies b blot out my transgressions.
2? c Wash me throughly from mine iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.
3? For d I acknowledge my transgressions:
And my sin is e ever before me.
4? f Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,
And done this evil g in thy sight:
h That thou mightest be justified when thou speakest,
And be clear when thou judgest.
5? Behold, i I was shapen in iniquity;
And in sin did my mother ? conceive me.
6? Behold, thou desirest truth j in the inward parts:
And in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
7? k Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean:
c Wash me, and l I shall be whiter than snow.
8? Make me to hear joy and gladness;
That m the bones which thou hast n broken may rejoice.
9? o Hide thy face from my sins,
And b blot out all mine iniquities.
10? Create in me p a clean heart, O God;
And q renew || a r right spirit within me.
11? s Cast me not away t from thy presence;
And take not u thy holy spirit from me.
12? Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;
And uphold me with thy w free spirit.
13? Then will I teach transgressors thy ways;
And sinners shall be x converted unto thee.
14? Deliver me from ? y bloodguiltiness, O God, thou z God of my salvation:
And a my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
15? O Lord, open thou my lips;
And my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
16? For thou b desirest not sacrifice; || else would I give it:
Thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17? The sacrifices of God are a c broken spirit:
A c broken and a d contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
18? e Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion:
f Build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19? Then shalt thou be b pleased with g the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and h whole burnt offering:

Author
All of The authors of the Psalms are unknown, we know that Moses wrote (1), David (73), Solomon (2), the sons of Korah (11, including one to which the name of Heman is also attached), Asaph (12), and Ethan (1) it is possible that others also wrote some of the Psalms, as well!!!!
The Author of Ps 51 is David.
Date
The date of the Psalms covers from the Exodus, roughly 1300 BC through the return of the exiles, 586ish some 800 years.
The Date of the Ps had to be around 1012-1011 BCE as Solomon was born in 1010 BCE.
History
This covers some of the major events in the Jewish History to vast to cover here.
This is the period of one of David’s greatest sins, the affair with Bathsheba, the murder of Uriah, and the cover up for over a year before David’s repentance.

Application
