Josiah Keeps the Passover
2Ch 35:1?Then Josiah celebrated the Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem, and they slaughtered the Passover animals on the fourteenth day of the first month.?
2Ch 35:2?He set the priests in their offices and encouraged them in the service of the house of the LORD.?
2Ch 35:3?He also said to the Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to the LORD, "Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel built; it will be a burden on your shoulders no longer. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.?
2Ch 35:4?"Prepare yourselves by your fathers' households in your divisions, according to the writing of David king of Israel and according to the writing of his son Solomon.?
2Ch 35:5?"Moreover, stand in the holy place according to the sections of the fathers' households of your brethren the lay people, and according to the Levites, by division of a father's household.?
2Ch 35:6?"Now slaughter the Passover animals, sanctify yourselves and prepare for your brethren to do according to the word of the LORD by Moses."?
2Ch 35:7?Josiah contributed to the lay people, to all who were present, flocks of lambs and young goats, all for the Passover offerings, numbering 30,000 plus 3,000 bulls; these were from the king's possessions.?
2Ch 35:8?His officers also contributed a freewill offering to the people, the priests and the Levites. Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, the officials of the house of God, gave to the priests for the Passover offerings 2,600 from the flocks and 300 bulls.?
2Ch 35:9?Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brothers, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, the officers of the Levites, contributed to the Levites for the Passover offerings 5,000 from the flocks and 500 bulls.?
2Ch 35:10?So the service was prepared, and the priests stood at their stations and the Levites by their divisions according to the king's command.?
2Ch 35:11?They slaughtered the Passover animals, and while the priests sprinkled the blood received from their hand, the Levites skinned them.?
2Ch 35:12?Then they removed the burnt offerings that they might give them to the sections of the fathers' households of the lay people to present to the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. They did this also with the bulls.?
2Ch 35:13?So they roasted the Passover animals on the fire according to the ordinance, and they boiled the holy things in pots, in kettles, in pans, and carried them speedily to all the lay people.?
2Ch 35:14?Afterwards they prepared for themselves and for the priests, because the priests, the sons of Aaron, were offering the burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron.?
2Ch 35:15?The singers, the sons of Asaph, were also at their stations according to the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king's seer; and the gatekeepers at each gate did not have to depart from their service, because the Levites their brethren prepared for them.?
2Ch 35:16?So all the service of the LORD was prepared on that day to celebrate the Passover, and to offer burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD according to the command of King Josiah.?
2Ch 35:17?Thus the sons of Israel who were present celebrated the Passover at that time, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days.?
2Ch 35:18?There had not been celebrated a Passover like it in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet; nor had any of the kings of Israel celebrated such a Passover as Josiah did with the priests, the Levites, all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.?
2Ch 35:19?In the eighteenth year of Josiah's reign this Passover was celebrated.?
Josiah Killed in Battle
2Ch 35:20?After all this, when Josiah had set the temple in order, Neco king of Egypt came up to make war at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to engage him.?
2Ch 35:21?But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, "What have we to do with each other, O King of Judah? I am not coming against you today but against the house with which I am at war, and God has ordered me to hurry. Stop for your own sake from interfering with God who is with me, so that He will not destroy you."?
2Ch 35:22?However, Josiah would not turn away from him, but disguised himself in order to make war with him; nor did he listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, but came to make war on the plain of Megiddo.?
2Ch 35:23?The archers shot King Josiah, and the king said to his servants, "Take me away, for I am badly wounded."?
2Ch 35:24?So his servants took him out of the chariot and carried him in the second chariot which he had, and brought him to Jerusalem where he died and was buried in the tombs of his fathers. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.?
2Ch 35:25?Then Jeremiah chanted a lament for Josiah. And all the male and female singers speak about Josiah in their lamentations to this day. And they made them an ordinance in Israel; behold, they are also written in the Lamentations.?
2Ch 35:26?Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his deeds of devotion as written in the law of the LORD,?
2Ch 35:27?and his acts, first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.?
Revelation From God
Author/ Date
Although the Book of 1 and 2 Chronicles does not inform us whom the author is, most scholars attribute it to Ezra, as it must be a post-exile writer that comes from a Davidic line. Most scholars though just call the author the Chronicler. The style of writing though is the same as with the Books of 1st and 2nd Kings and the writer is flushing out for us details that where left out of the earlier books, as if to say, Oh I should have mention this, or I should have written about that, much the way authors today would rewrite a pervious book as a new edition.?
It should also be noted, 1st and 2nd Chronicles was actually one book until the Septuagint split them into two books because they would not fit on the same scroll.?
There is no date given for the writing of 1st and 2nd Chronicler however looking at the genealogy and the fact that not one of the Davidic line is mentioned after Anani, whose the eighth generation from Jehoiachin, (1Ch_3:24). Jehoiachin was taken captive by the Babylonians in 598 B.C. If we account for the avenage life span of the generations to be 25 years, Anani would have been born between 425 and 400 b.c. Thus is must have been written in the 5th century on or around 400 BCE. And as David is such a prominent part of the Chronicler's stroy it is inconceivable that if the book had been written after 400 B.C. that the genealogy of David was not covered. Thus is has to be written around 400 B.C
With Ezra dying around 457 B.C. and with the date of the Chronicles being around 400 that would exclude Ezra as the author. But it must have been an understudy of Ezar that wrote Chronicles as it does copy Ezar's style.

History and Theology
Once again just as with 'The Book of Reigns', 1st and 2nd Chronicles has to be read with an eye on history and an eye on Theology. You can not sperate the Theological ideology of Grace that is present throughout the Books of Chronicles, from the history that is presented throughout.?
Once again the Chronicler goes to great length to give us the details of things that were omitted, Paralipomena (Greek for “Things omitted”, which is the Greek title for the Book of Chronicles),?in "The Book of Reigns' thus, giving us a better historical overview of King David, King Solomon and the following generations of Kings of Judah.?
Structure
Just in 'The Book of Reigns', the Chronicler uses the same sources to write 1st and 2nd Chronicles plus a couple of additional sources, he was a meticulous historian who carefully utilized official and unofficial documents. We must also mention that the Book of Chronicles is actually the last book of the Hebrew Cannon, it followed the writing, the law and the Prophets. When Jesus spoke of the?martyrdom "from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple" Luk_11:51, He was speaking of the History from the Beginning to the End from Genesis to Chronicles. As if to say He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End Rev_1:8!!!!

Purpose
There are several theological purposes behind the writing of 1st and 2nd Chronicles, The 1st to remind us all whom we are, the Body of Christ Jesus, YHWH the Church, YHWH Qahal, Ecclesia 2Ch_7:14, 1Sa_18:1-5, Eze_1:1-28, Eze_10:1-22, Eze_40:1-49 and that we must seek YHWH with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, 2Ch_7:14,?Mat_7:7-8, Joh_7:17. 1Ch_17:12 - informs us that Solomon is going to build a house for YHWH, the Body of Christ Jesus, YHWH the Church, YHWH Qahal, Ecclesia, 1Co_12:1-31, 2Co_5:17-21, 2Co_6:14-18, Col_1:15-19, Eph_2:1-22, Eph_4:1-32,?and it will be established for all eternity, Rev_22:5!!!! It also informs us that the Messiah will come from the Lion of Judah, 2Sa_7:8-17, Isa_9:6-7, Jer_23:5, Jer_33:17, Gen_49:10, Psa_89:34-37, Isa_11:1!!!!?This is clearly the blessing of the Messiah coming through David, the Lion of Judah, Rev_5:5, Rev_22:16, Isa_9:6-7, Isa_11:1-10, who is the Savior of the World, Joh_1:29, just a YHWH has promised!!!! 1st and 2nd Chronicles?shows God’s elective and preserving grace in His covenant people through David, the messianic king and priest!!! David is a pre-Christ, the messianic Priest. Understanding that David is both a King and Priest that the Messiah would come through is critical to understanding 1st and 2nd Chronicles!!!!
