3 John 9 “I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them receiveth us not.”
John had a message for a church and when he sent it to them a big shot, named Diotrephes, intercepted the message and refused to allow the church to receive it. Why? He loved to have the preeminence. He thought that only what he had to say was important. He actually believed that he had all of the answers and nothing that anyone else had to say could possibly be more important than what he had to say or what he thought.
One of the great dangers to success is success itself. Diotrephes probably had experienced some measure of success in his work among the church and maybe people had told him he was doing a really good job. The problem came when he began to believe the accolades that he was hearing about his self.
The success that any of us experience is a result of God’s grace in our lives and the aid of those around us. We all need others to aid us in accomplishing anything worthwhile. Don’t allow yourself to get too big for your britches!!
Always be willing to listen to the ideas of others and the things that they bring to the table. Don’t shut anyone out or begin to think that anyone is unimportant.
Have you ever thought that every human being knows at least one thing that you don’t know? Why not give them a chance to tell or teach you that one thing?
Diotrephes was unwilling to listen and learn. He wanted to be heard and admired. I don’t know about you but I want to be the one who puts others in the spotlight and gives others the credit. I want to be the individual that can learn that one thing that I don’t know from everyone that I meet.
