Ecclesiastes 10:8 “He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.”
Hedges are put in place as a border to keep us in a certain area or to keep us out of a certain area. They are boundaries. Boundaries are meant for our protection in many cases. We teach our children to stay in the yard and not to wander beyond the boundaries that we have set and established.
We all need boundaries in our lives, at work, at home, at school and within all relationships. When we break through the boundaries that have been established we run the risk of being bitten.
I have found that it is not only wise to know what the boundaries are and not to break through them but to keep a distance from those boundaries. What I mean by this is that I have found that some people want to walk as close to the edge as is humanly possible without crossing the line. It is much wiser to keep a safe distance from the boundary lest you slip and cross the line.
What boundaries have you set and established in your life? What are the ethics that are the backbone of your character? What lines have you set up that you refuse to cross over?
I know people that feel that they can do whatever they want whenever they want. Can you imagine a football game without boundaries? A basketball game, a baseball game, a soccer game, a hockey match? Life is no different than sports, we need to establish the rules and boundaries before we are confronted with the choice
Plant your hedges today and then don’t get too close, lest a serpent bite you.
