BIAS AND BUSINESS: THE EVER-MOVING TARGET

BIAS AND BUSINESS: THE EVER-MOVING TARGET

WHAT IS BIAS IN THE WORKPLACE?

Bias in the workplace is the purposeful or accidental assumptions made when hiring candidates, delegating tasks or comparing employees.

It is positive to see that many organisations have invested in unconscious bias training, but is this alone enough? After all, inclusion is an ever-moving target, and we should always be striving to hit the bullseye.

PUTTING WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT INTO PRACTICE

After identifying biases in the workplace, it is time to act. It is key for businesses to not only learn from their training but to put it into practice.

SIMPLE STEPS TO ADDRESSING BIAS IN YOUR BUSINESS:

1. CREATING AN ANTI-BIAS POLICY

Creating an anti-bias policy is important to raise awareness of bias in the workplace and inform your employees of your expectations of them. You should regularly update your policy and review whether you are meeting your objectives.

2. ADOPTING AN ANONYMOUS RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Adopting an anonymous recruitment process removes personal information from candidate applications. This process makes it easier for hiring managers to make objective decisions about a candidate’s skills.

3. USING A SCORING SHEET DURING INTERVIEWS

Scoring candidates on their answers and on how well they meet the job specification during an interview helps hiring managers to eradicate conscious and unconscious biases during the hiring process.

HOW ADDRESSING BIAS WILL BENEFIT YOUR BUSINESS

With the best practice in the workplace, you can create a truly inclusive work environment and positively impact your bottom line.

Research from Kellogg Insight shows that well-managed diverse groups outperform homogeneous ones and are more committed, have higher collective intelligence, and are better at making decisions and solving problems1.

By taking steps to remove bias from your business, you will be able to hire the most qualified individuals, which will improve your business’ chances of success.
