As AI continues to reshape the global paradigm, one thing has become clear: it's impossible to eliminate bias entirely. Instead, it seems that AI creators must make deliberate choices about the biases they actively embed within their models.?

In other words, they must choose their bias.

Bias in AI is not always about negativity—it's often about perspective, worldview, and priorities. Every dataset, algorithm, and design decision reflects a certain viewpoint. The key challenge isn't to remove bias but to understand and manage it. We need to consciously decide which biases serve the greater good and which could lead to unintended consequences.

For instance, consider a model used in educational settings. Should it prioritize academic performance and student outcomes, equity, parity, socio-emotional development, or something else?

All these perspectives and priorities may be valid but lead to different outcomes. As AI leaders, our responsibility is to align these choices with our ethical standards and the needs of those we serve.

The conversation about bias in AI isn't about striving for impossible neutrality—it's about making thoughtful, informed choices that reflect our values.

Impact on Districts and Schools

Some districts and schools are beginning to develop their own self-contained AI models. As they move forward, the implications of these biases become even more significant. While these models are customizable, allowing educational organizations to tailor AI to their specific needs, it also requires them to make critical decisions about which biases to introduce.

It’s also true that not all schools and districts will have the resources to create their own AI models from scratch. Many, maybe even most, will rely on third-party systems with embedded AI capabilities. In these cases, the responsibility shifts to selecting solutions that align with their educational goals and values.

Key Considerations When Selecting AI Solutions

When choosing AI systems, schools and districts should ask a series of critical questions to ensure the technology they adopt aligns with their values and serves their communities effectively:

  • What biases are present in this AI system? Understand the biases that are embedded in the AI model. What priorities or perspectives does it reflect, and how might these influence outcomes in your specific educational environment?
  • How transparent is the AI vendor about the system's decision-making process? Ensure that the vendor provides clear documentation on how the AI makes decisions. Transparency is crucial for building trust among stakeholders.
  • What ethical standards does the AI vendor follow? Inquire about the ethical guidelines the vendor adheres to when developing and deploying their AI solutions. Do these standards align with your district's values?
  • Does the system prioritize student outcomes, equity, parity, socio-emotional development, or something else? Determine what the system prioritizes and how those priorities align with your district's goals. Ensure the AI supports the specific educational outcomes that matter most to your community.
  • What level of customization is available? Determine whether the AI system can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your school or district. Customization might include adjusting priorities within the model or integrating additional data sources.
  • What are the data privacy and security protocols? Since AI systems often rely on large datasets, it's essential to understand how student data will be protected. Ensure that the system complies with all relevant privacy laws and regulations.
  • How will this AI system be supported and updated? AI systems evolve over time. Ask about the vendor's commitment to ongoing support, updates, and improvements to ensure the system remains effective and aligned with educational goals.

Real-World Examples of AI Bias in Education

Since this article has been pretty technical. Here are a few of real-world examples that may help with understanding how AI bias impacts educational outcomes:

  • Curriculum Recommendation Systems: AI-driven systems are used to recommend course materials and learning paths for students based on their past performance and interests. However, these systems might unintentionally narrow students' academic choices by reinforcing their existing strengths and preferences. For instance, a student who excels in mathematics might be continually directed toward STEM subjects, potentially limiting their exposure to humanities or arts, which could provide a more well-rounded education.
  • Teacher Evaluation Tools: Some districts have adopted AI tools to evaluate teacher performance based on student outcomes, classroom observations, and other metrics. While these tools can provide valuable insights, they may also introduce biases based on factors such as class size, socioeconomic background of students, or even the subjects taught. A teacher working in a less affluent area might receive lower evaluations not because of their teaching ability, but due to external factors that the AI system doesn't fully account for.

The long-term implications of AI bias in education are significant. If not carefully managed, biased AI systems could influence educational outcomes, potentially limiting opportunities for some students or reinforcing existing disparities in access to resources and support.

Over time, the use of AI in education will likely expand, making it even more critical to address biases early in the development and implementation process. Ensuring that AI systems are designed and used with a focus on fairness and balanced perspectives will help foster an educational environment where each student has the opportunity to succeed.

Excellent article. Dr. Joe coined a term that I’ll never forget "inbred AI." Since AI models scour publicly available information for training their models, more and more information posted to the web will be generated by AI. Eventually AI models will simply be perpetuating content that was created by other AIs. Scary prospect, but on point for this article. We must always look for inherent bias and ensure there is always a human touch.

Thanks for writing this article. I enjoyed reading it and there’s lots of actionable advice in there. One big thing I think you need to include is pairing humans and technologies together. We shouldn’t be unilaterally handing the reigns of control over to AI whether for resource allocation, teacher evaluations, or learning paths. We should be pairing humans and the technology together. Especially in education, there’s lots that should be tackled more as as an AI Co-Pilot (humans and AI working together) or AI- powered Projections instead of thinking solely in an AI Agent method (e.g. we define outcome and agent does everything to deliver that outcome) Pairing technology with humans usually yields better results. I’ll refer to Paltantir and finding bin Laden as an example. Human beings and AI tools have different and unique strengths. We have different forms of intelligence. Pairing humans and technology together is what can lead to exceptional results, especially in the education field.
