In a recent post, envelope magnate, and outstanding business counselor, Harvey Mackay made a point about how people will too often believe a lie rather than the naked truth. He referred to this moral deterioration as “truth decay.”?
One element in the Sustained Leadership WBS is that a sustained leader will always seek the truth and be fact-based (element 1.2.1.2). They will even go further and seek to avoid willful ignorance (element 5.2.8) – a situation where someone is presented with the truth, yet persists in believing something different.
Perhaps you have encountered such people who will essentially say, “I’ve made up my mind. Do not confuse me with the facts!”?
Certainly, we all want to have the maximum amount of information available before we make a decision, but no one’s crystal ball works all the time (if ever!) It is important to not allow such fears to create a procrastination effect. Sustained leaders have a bias for action (element 2.3) and learn to be decisive (element 2.3.6). When possible, when new information comes to light, they make a mid-course correction.
