When I first saw Cicely Tyson, I wanted to be like her. I wanted to be graceful, elegant, stately and gorgeous and at the same time be ground-breaking and historic. But I was too afraid. Too afraid to be that incredible queen that she calls on all of us to be.

I have some lovely photos to remember her and I most loved her as Binta in Roots. I was 6 when I saw her in that film. I walked differently at school after that day. I could be unapologetically myself. Not a queen but a princess with a great heritage.
