Welcome to the Better Hiring Institute's latest newsletter

We have some updates on our ongoing projects and campaigns, as well as exciting launches for the rest of the year!

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Modernising Employment

The UK's first APPG on Modernising Employment has launched to great positivity from industry. The first event is taking place on 10th July, with a focus on how we can make Hiring in the UK the fastest globally.

In the session, we will be hearing from three fantastic speakers:

Lisa Scales , Talent Acquisition Director, Royal Mail

Mike Ruddle , Chief Commercial Officer, NHS Professionals

Keith Rosser , Chair, Better Hiring Institute (BHI)

We are looking forward to hearing from around 50 organisations on how we make the UK the fastest place to hire globally, as well as the impact on their organisations and society at large.

The session will focus on our 10-Point Plan for Faster Hiring, submitted to government this year. Click here to take a read of our plan and feel free to message with any thoughts or data.

  4. How long it takes to hire an individual
  5. What would the impact be if this time could be halved?

Better Hiring Toolkit for Industry Series

Following on from the Better Hiring Toolkit for Care launch this year, we are keeping pace and ready to keep on launching sector-specific guidance, with our Better Hiring Toolkit for Financial Services having launched in June!

We will be moving swiftly to launch our Better Hiring Toolkit for Local Authorities in August, and our Better Hiring Toolkit for Education Supply Chains in the September re-release of Keeping Children Safe in Education.

We are on track to cover around 80-90% of the UK's workforce by the end of the year! If you would like to get involved for your sector, please do get in touch with us at [email protected].

Influencing our Work in Faster, Fairer and Safer

Last month, our Chair, Keith Rosser , met with Lord Sharpe on how to tackle bad online recruitment, including online jobs that are masking fraud, modern slavery, and scams or illegal work. This centred on the Online Safety Bill and its scope with tackling poor online practices.

We have also begun work with Cifas on application fraud, after a worrying increase in fraudulent references and referees, undisclosed second jobs, and poor visa practices. We are looking to publish guidance for employers to ensure that all hiring managers are aware of the tell-tale signs of an unsuitable employee.

Subcommittee Insights

June marked a number of great meetings, including Financial Services, Local Government, Health and Social Care, and Recruitment. We were delighted to meet with our fantastic members and hear about what exactly is happening in the world of hiring, as well as the change that industry would like to see.

As always, there were fantastic points made, as well as worrying trends identified, informing our projects and campaigns as we move into H2 2023.
