#BeyondWomenMonth (Women@SACAA #AviationGameChangers)

#BeyondWomenMonth: Women at the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) at all levels play a core part in taking the SACAA brand to higher heights. This demonstrates how #SACAA has paved the way for a more gender-inclusive environment. As the #WomenMonth has drawn to a close, we would like to share some of the profiles of the women employees at SACAA with you. The spotlight is on Ms Matlhogonolo Ramukumba.

?Women across the aviation landscape have really made an indelible mark and one of those remarkable ones in aviation is Ms Matlhogonolo Ramukumba, who has done exceptional work as a Certification Engineer, and whose scope of work is not limited to a specific aircraft type or system. She strongly believes that ‘being a part of the aviation industry is extremely rewarding,’ in particular within the regulatory space.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at the SACAA?

The role of a Certification Engineer involves the certification of aircraft/aircraft parts, the approval of design changes to aircraft/aircraft parts, the validation of aircraft, as well as performing oversight over Design Organisations. As a Certification Engineer, I work widely across the industry, as more engagement regarding the regulatory aspects is required to ensure that the SACAA keeps abreast of future industry projects and innovation technologies.

Why did you choose to apply to work at the SACAA?

I was working for the South African Express Airways AMO as an Engineering Analyst. Even with my engineering degree, I felt that I was lacking knowledge regarding ‘’compliance.’

My seniors at Express always encouraged me and insisted that should an opportunity arise to obtain ‘’regulatory experience’’, I should take it.

What do you find most challenging about working for a Regulator?

Regulators often have to balance the task of protecting the public from harm, with the need for the industry to introduce technological change and innovation.

The challenge is to achieve this balance without impeding industry health and economic growth.??

What do you find most challenging about your job?

My scope of work is not limited to a specific aircraft type or system. With the constant introduction of modern technologies and frameworks, it is difficult to keep up; as a result, my work includes much ?reading and research.

When your family and friends find out that you work for the SACAA, what do they ask or say?

They become very inquisitive and surprised that there are individuals that perform our role all over the world.

What keeps you going in the face of challenges?

I believe that I have good support structures; during challenging times I lean on my support for strength and counsel.

I have come to accept that I will face challenges, big and small; however, I have learnt that my attitude will be what pulls me through.

The interest in the aviation sector seems to be growing amongst women, why do you think that is the case?

Knowledge is power, the youth of today have better access to information, and there are far more opportunities specifically for women.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Growth is important in all aspects of life; ‘’if you are not growing, you are dying’’.

I am open to any opportunity that presents a platform for me to grow.

Any tips for aspiring aviators in your field?

Being a part of the aviation industry is extremely rewarding. The best thing one can do is to equip oneself with information and knowledge about the industry. Aviation presents numerous career options, and aspiring aviators must educate themselves on the opportunities that exist and, on the skills, acumen, and qualifications required to succeed.
