Beyond Wireframes: Design Thinking for Aspiring UX Designers
For aspiring designers, I strongly recommend focusing on mastering the design process and actively seeking opportunities to influence stakeholders through insightful design ideation. This approach should be reflected in your portfolio.
It's common for designers, especially early in their careers, to feel pressured by deadlines and jump straight into wireframing or prototyping, neglecting the crucial foundational steps. I've encountered many who cite narrow project scope or immediate stakeholder demands as justifications for this shortcut. This is particularly prevalent among designers in fast-paced startup environments with intense go-to-market pressure.
However, even within tight constraints, you can be agile in your design approach and exert significant influence through strong design thinking. This involves practicing proactive UX advocacy and educating stakeholders about the potential pitfalls of neglecting the initial research and ideation phases. Remember, rushing through the process can lead to tunnel vision and ultimately cost more in the long run compared to the initial investment in understanding the "who" and "what" behind your design.
By incorporating these practices, you'll not only create more user-centered and impactful designs but also demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of the design process, making your portfolio stand out.
