Beyond Trust: How Web3 Enables Trustless Systems for a Decentralized World

Imagine a world where we don't need to trust anyone to make sure that everything is working correctly online. Sounds interesting, right? That's what Web3 and trustless systems are all about.

Let's consider a trustless system in the form of a decentralized lemonade stand. Imagine you and your friends want to start a lemonade stand, but you all live far apart. With a trustless system using Web3, you can create a decentralized lemonade stand that works without any of you needing to trust each other.

Here's how it works:

  1. You create a digital lemonade stand using smart contracts, which are like automatic rules that manage the business.
  2. Each of you has a digital wallet to store your share of the profits from the lemonade stand.
  3. The smart contract automatically divides the profits from the lemonade stand among all of you, based on the rules you set.

In this example, you don't need to trust each other to share the profits fairly because the smart contract enforces the rules automatically. No one can cheat or change the rules without everyone else knowing.

This trustless system allows you and your friends to run the lemonade stand together, even if you're far away from each other and can't meet in person.

More examples of trustless systems made possible by Web3:

  1. Decentralized Finance (DeFi): DeFi is a new way of doing financial transactions online using blockchain technology. Instead of relying on banks and other institutions to manage our money, we can use smart contracts to create trustless financial systems where we don't need to trust anyone.
  2. Decentralized Identity: With Web3, we can create decentralized identity systems where we control our personal information instead of relying on companies like Facebook or Google. This means that we don't need to trust these companies to keep our information safe and private.
  3. Decentralized Voting: Voting is an essential part of any democratic system. With Web3, we can create trustless voting systems where everyone can see that their vote is being counted correctly, without needing to trust any central authority.

“Trust” is the building block of any kind of relationship (financial , personal etc … ) . I was disturbed the first time I heard “trustless” but actually the “trust” component is handled by the protocol . Consensus is reached in a decentralized fashion which was completely new to me as so far it was achieved by a central entity’s approval .
