Beyond Trees: Arbor Month 2024
Hey?Friend,
As we approach?Arbor Month this September,?Greenpop is?looking Beyond Trees.
We're amplifying our?efforts to showcase how the effective use of tree planting can be a critical nature-based solution to the environmental challenges we face in Sub-Saharan?Africa.?Tree planting should be seen as a means to an end, rather than an end in itself.
We're celebrating forests, indigenous ecosystems, sustainable land use, increased biodiversity, carbon sinks, watershed management, and environmental stewardship.?You're invited to make an impact with us!

It’s estimated that?over 1.6 billion people worldwide are reliant on forests for their livelihoods.?Forests provide essential resources, and many indigenous and local communities depend on forests for cultural & traditional practices.
80% of land-based animal species rely on forest ecosystems for both their habitat and food sources.?These forests provide shelter, breeding grounds, and a rich diversity of plant life, which is crucial for the diets and survival strategies of countless species.
Forests cover 31% of earth’s landmass, accounting for mass amounts of carbon sequestration.?They also provide diverse habitats that support a wide array of species, contributing to biodiversity.
Forest restoration is crucial in Africa, where rich biodiversity and vital ecosystem services are under threat from unsustainable land use practices and the spread of invasive alien vegetation. Forests support the livelihoods of millions across the continent, and preserving the habitats of countless unique species.
However, unsustainable agricultural expansion, the mismanagement of alien vegetation, logging, and charcoal production have significantly reduced forest cover, compromising the ability of these ecosystems to sequester carbon, stabilise soils, and regulate water supplies.
Restoring degraded forests in Africa is vital to enhance ecosystem resilience, support livelihoods, and mitigate climate change.
Greenpop focuses on?long-term, hands-on relationships to support the protection and restoration of indigenous systems.?We don’t use “seed bombs”, plantation forestry, drone planting, or invasive species.
We prioritise sound ecological principles to work towards habitat restoration,?working closely with local communities and forest users.
This means that?our progress may be slower than other tree-planting projects, but our impact is more sustainable.
