I feel in some respects that we have a long way to go for EAs to viewed more strategically. I personally hate the word assistant as part of my title. It sounds like I only help. And because most companies do not have career progression levels for admin staff there is no differentiation between somebody with 5 years experience and somebody with 20. For now I feel having titles that can reflect your level and speak more to the value we should be bringing will go a long way to facilitate positive change for our profession. I don’t necessarily agree that Chief of Staff is a natural progression for an EA. But it can become a bit easier for those who might want if we are given the opportunity to operate more strategically.

Both roles are invaluable assets to an organization. EAs definitely contribute significantly and often go above and beyond. From our experience via training in this very transition, some EAs choose to pursue the Chief of Staff role when they feel they’d rather provide more strategic support (brainstorming, ideating, implementing projects and plans) than tactical support (executing tasks and logistics).
