Beyond the Tech Jargon: Demystifying Big Data for UX Professionals
Through recent conversations with talented UX professionals during interviews, I've noticed a recurring question: what exactly does Google Core Data do? While the excitement for the opportunity is evident, the vastness and technical nature of the big data ecosystem can sometimes leave a sense of ambiguity.
This article aims to bridge that gap, providing a simplified understanding of this complex landscape and highlighting the crucial role UX plays within it. By demystifying the jargon and showcasing the tangible impact of user-centered design in Google Core Data, I hope to inspire more UX professionals to explore this exciting and impactful domain.
The world of big data can seem daunting, especially for those outside the technical realm. But for UX designers and researchers, understanding this complex ecosystem is crucial to see how their expertise contributes to its success.
Let's break it down in a relatable way. Imagine water as our data. We need it for everything, just like digital products need data to function. But no one goes directly to a river to get water for their home (unless living by a riverbank! ??). Instead, we rely on a vast infrastructure of water pipelines and treatment plants, built and maintained by intermediaries. Similarly, in the big data world, products don't directly "fetch" data; they rely on data pipelines and infrastructure provided by various players.
The high-level visualization below shows the different stages and products involved in the big data ecosystem. Each product caters to specific needs, just like the various components in a water supply system.
Google Core Data Team
Now, think of Google Core Data as the team responsible for building and maintaining this intricate "water supply system" for Google's data needs. Instead of physical pipes and plants, we create enterprise-level software products that support the ecosystem.
This is where UX design and research come into play. By ensuring world-class user experiences for these internal products, we directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of the data flow within Google.
