Beyond the Surface: Submerging into Self

Beyond the Surface: Submerging into Self

What's the deepest breath you've ever taken? After recently watching a documentary about a free diver, it struck me how much life resembles the meticulous sport of free diving. On its surface, life can seem straightforward, a smooth sail across familiar waters.

Yet, there are moments when we yearn for something more profound, a deeper understanding akin to the depths explored by few who can hold their breath long enough.

In these depths, beyond the comfortable surface, lies a world of introspection and discovery, waiting to be explored. But we don't all willingly submerge into self.

At the surface, life feels more manageable (albeit overwhelming at times) and interactions are plentiful. Here, in our comfort zone, we glide over challenges, often avoiding the depths where more complex currents of truths flow.

In staying at the surface, we risk missing the profound insights that lie in the deeper waters of our existence.

Choosing to dive deeper is like confronting life's significant challenges. It requires resilience (faith), mental fortitude, and an inner strength that mirrors the physical demands of deep diving. Just as divers meticulously prepare for their descent, we, too, must build our internal resilience to confront life’s depths. This preparation reveals our true capacity to face what lies beneath the surface.

In the depths, solitude envelops us. Fewer companions can follow as we delve into our personal abyss.

Yet, it is in this solitude that we often discover the most about ourselves.

Away from the distractions of the surface, we confront fears and learn the resilience of our spirit. This introspection is crucial, but so is the journey back to the surface. Coming back up is not a retreat; rather, it's an essential act of renewal, crucial to taking our next breath.

Resurfacing represents a return to our daily lives, a necessary re-engagement with the world. The balance between exploring the depths and maintaining our surface interactions is where we find our equilibrium (this is the balance between action and contemplation).

Just as the deep diver cannot remain under water indefinitely, we too must find a balance between depth and normality.

In life's deepest waters, the companions who can join us are rare but invaluable. They're often those who have navigated their own deep waters and offer empathy and understanding. While our journeys are deeply personal, these companions remind us that we don’t have to navigate them alone.

In the continuous cycle of diving deep and resurfacing, we find not just life's challenges but also its profound beauty and truth. Each dive enriches us, making us more resilient and prepared for whatever lies ahead, teaching us the delicate art of balancing depth with the need to come up for air.

In this full experience of life, we're able to explore our purpose and share it with others - helping them define and share their deeper value and purpose in turn.

I love the balance between the deep dive and the reality of life on the surface - Both are needed to livei life with depth-meaning - purpose and in the reality they both exist. Takes bravery and discipline to plunge below, patience and practise to adapt to the pressures that come with going under and deeper - but the deeps stressor change us - mentally - emotionally and even physically we are shifted to be more than we were before - somehow the dark of the deep leads us to the light of Life...

Love this Tim Slatter! Resonates with my purpose in Life which is to be a deep-diver with my friends, my partners, my clients, my colleagues. Here to sit open minded, open hearted and with curiosity whilst those I love explore the depths of who they are. Beautiful read xoxo
