Beyond the Surface: Decoding Company Culture as a Savvy Job Seeker in Medical Affairs

Company culture is SO important to almost all of the candidates I speak with, yet it can be very hard to assess during the Medical Affairs job-search process.

You may read negative things on Glassdoor or Cafepharma or hear from a friend's colleague that a specific company had a terrible culture. Maybe it's true--how do you REALLY know?

What action steps can you take to evaluate company culture?

1. Evaluate the Hiring Process: Consider the interview process itself as a window into the company's culture. Were the interviewers respectful and prepared? Did they communicate effectively?

2. Check Employee Longevity: On platforms like #LinkedIn, see how long employees have been with the company. A higher average tenure might indicate a positive work environment where people choose to stay.

3. Review Employee Perks: Look beyond standard benefits. Investigate unique perks like wellness programs, volunteer opportunities, or special events that showcase the company's commitment to employee well-being.

4. Diversity and Inclusion Efforts: Investigate the company's efforts towards diversity and inclusion. Ask about programs, policies, and initiatives they have in place to promote a diverse workplace.

5. Assess Employee Development: Inquire about opportunities for professional growth and development. A company that invests in its employees' growth is likely to have a positive and nurturing culture.

6. Review Company Values and Mission: Read the company's mission statement and values. Do these align with your personal values and aspirations? A strong alignment suggests a potentially good cultural fit.

7. Talk to Current or Former Employees: If possible, connect with current or former employees to gain insights into the company culture. You can reach out on LinkedIn or attend networking events to get firsthand perspectives.

Remember that company culture in #medicalaffairs is a complex blend of various factors, and it's important to evaluate multiple aspects to gain a well-rounded understanding. You can always ask a trusted recruiter for guidance on this topic. Assessing culture early in the job search process can help you make an informed decision that aligns with your career goals and personal values.
