Beyond Solo

Ten years ago on April 5th, 2013, Chinese Skipper Guo Chuan made history by completing a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe, covering over 21,000 nautical miles in 138 days on his Class40 boat. His triumph of endurance, skill, and determination cemented his place in sailing history as one of the great solo sailors of his generation. As Guo's manager, I was thrilled to support him, but his tragic disappearance during a solo trans-Pacific record attempt in 2016 left me feeling lost and struggling with PTSD.

During the pandemic, , I discovered something new: the world of blockchain and its potential to transform the world of sailing.?

I realised that there were many parallels between sailing and blockchain, such as trust and community. In sailing, the level of trust and communication between solo skippers and their shore teams is crucial. Solo sailing may seem like a solitary endeavour, but in reality, solo skippers rely on their shore teams for support, communication, and safety.?

Similarly, blockchain technology thrives on trust and collaboration within its community. Trust is the foundation of successful partnerships and collaborations, and communication is essential for ensuring everyone works towards a common goal.

Guo Chuan's legacy played a significant role in my healing process. Despite his tragic end, his journey inspired countless people who love sailing to pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting they might seem. Guo Chuan's solo sail around the world reminded me that we can overcome even the most challenging obstacles if we have the courage and determination to do so.

As we remember Guo Chuan on the 10th anniversary of his historic nonstop solo sail around the world, we are reminded of the power of human determination and the beauty of the open sea. His legacy is a reminder that we can achieve greatness as long as we have a vision and don’t give up easily and have the will to pursue our dreams and go beyond what we thought was possible.

I am grateful for the lessons I learned from offshore sailing and blockchain. We are stronger when we work together towards a common goal. Blockchain has opened a new horizon for me, and I appreciate the power of community and trust in achieving our dreams with blockchain technology and innovation.
