Beyond the Role: Rethinking Contribution at Work

Beyond the Role: Rethinking Contribution at Work

Recently, in a coaching conversation with a senior leader, we explored an interesting question about contribution. This leader expressed feeling undervalued—despite managing large teams, executing strategies, and participating in cross-functional projects. All commendable efforts, right? Yet, when I asked him, “How are you contributing to the organization?” his response mirrored his job description.

I pressed further, “But how are you contributing beyond your role?” The question landed like a thunderclap. There was silence. He repeated his previous answer: managing finances, mentoring his team, and delivering on strategic goals.

“That’s excellent,” I said, “but isn’t that what you are already paid to do?”

The conversation revealed a blind spot many professionals share. It’s easy to equate fulfilling job responsibilities with contributing to the larger organizational ecosystem. While excelling in our roles is necessary, true contribution often lies in going beyond our functional duties.

What Does “Going Beyond” Mean?

Going beyond isn’t about working longer hours or taking on more tasks; it’s about adding unique value that strengthens the organization. And, it could take many shapes and forms...

  • Shaping culture by fostering psychological safety, inclusion, and innovation within teams.
  • Driving systemic change by identifying inefficiencies and implementing long-term solutions.
  • Championing shared goals that align with the organization’s mission, even outside your direct responsibilities.
  • Mentoring across teams, not just within your function, to build future leaders.
  • and more...

True contribution is about leaving a positive legacy that transcends job descriptions.

Reflection Questions

As a leader when you are feeling not valued enough, not growing or stuck, do ask yourself these questions:

  1. What impact are you making beyond your immediate responsibilities?
  2. Are you helping your organization grow holistically, not just within your domain?
  3. How do you define success—through personal achievements or through collective progress?

As you reflect on these questions, remember that contribution goes hand in hand with visibility and recognition. Share your initiatives, advocate for organizational growth, and align your efforts with the company’s larger vision.

Ask yourself today: Am I merely earning my daily bread, or am I leaving behind breadcrumbs for others to follow?

Let’s work together to explore how you can create value beyond the expected. Reach out to me if you'd like to have a conversation with me along these lines.
