Beyond Resolutions: Finding Your Best Self

"May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions", Joey Adams

As the new year dawns, instead of succumbing to the familiar ritual of crafting resolutions that often carry the weight of unrealistic expectations and strict timelines, perhaps opt for a different path; a journey towards finding your best self.

Rather than encapsulating personal development within the confines of a calendar year, the pursuit of finding your best self extends beyond temporal constraints. It becomes a perpetual journey, a commitment to self-discovery and growth that evolves organically. For me, this alternative approach embodies the essence of continuous personal improvement.

In the realm of finding your best self, a holistic perspective takes precedence. It is an acknowledgment that fulfilment is not a singular achievement but a harmonious balance across various facets of life. It is an interconnected journey, woven into the fabric of relationships. It is about fostering empathy, compassion, and understanding in the tapestry of human connections. It involves recognising the shared humanity that binds us all.

Central to this journey is the art of self-reflection. It is a conscious effort to understand your values, aspirations, and passions. It requires a dialogue with your innermost desires, the dreams that flutter in the recesses of your heart, often drowned out by the practicalities of everyday existence. Regular introspection becomes the compass guiding your way, helping you navigate through the landscape of your values, strengths, weaknesses, passions, and priorities. It is through this self-awareness that the contours of the path toward your best-self become clearer.

Similar to resolutions, the process of finding your best self is not devoid of goals; however, these goals are purpose driven. They emanate from a profound understanding of personal values and aspirations, forgoing external expectations or fleeting trends.

This intentional goal setting aligns seamlessly with your authentic self, and, for me, can be distilled down to four aspects of self-knowing; knowing who you are (personality), what you are (strengths), how you are (emotions), and most importantly, why you are (purpose).?

Personality (Who You Are)

Personality, a unique blend of traits and behaviours, serves as the foundational element to finding your best self. It acts as a compass, guiding you through the intricacies of self-awareness.

"Beauty captures your attention; personality captures your heart", Oscar Wilde

By comprehending who you are, you gain insights into your strengths, weaknesses, and areas necessitating improvement. This self-awareness becomes a linchpin for personal development, allowing you to navigate life with a deeper understanding of yourself.

Strengths (What You Are)

Strengths, defined as inherent or acquired capabilities, emerge as pivotal contributors to personal growth. Identifying and harnessing these strengths allows you to channel your energy into activities that align with your natural talents.

"Don't push your weaknesses, play with your strengths", Jennifer Lopez

This focused approach not only boosts confidence but propels personal development by optimising potential. Aligning personal and professional goals with your strengths enhances the likelihood of success, facilitating a more authentic and fulfilling journey.

Emotions (How You Are)

Emotional intelligence, a cornerstone in the mosaic of personal development, encapsulates the ability to perceive, understand, and regulate your emotions, as well as those of others. This skill set fosters self-regulation, promoting resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.

"How you act emotionally is a choice in any situation", Judith Orloff

Emotionally intelligent individuals are equipped with the tools to navigate the complexities of human interaction, fostering effective communication, empathy, and conflict resolution.

Purpose (Why You Are)

At its core, purpose serves as a compass, guiding you through the labyrinth of choices and challenges. In the absence of a defined purpose, life can resemble a ship without a rudder, drifting aimlessly in the vast expanse of uncertainty.

"The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why", Mark Twain.

Purpose provides the coordinates, offering a sense of direction that shapes aspirations and fuels the pursuit of goals.? Through this journey, you gain insights into what resonates with your core being, allowing you to align your actions with a sense of authenticity.

The mindset underlying this journey is distinct. It is not about the rigidity of resolutions with their predetermined outcomes; rather, it is a flexible and adaptable approach. Embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and celebrating progress become integral parts of the narrative, fostering resilience in the face of adversity. It necessitates a willingness to confront the shadows lurking within, acknowledging both the virtues and vices that shape your character. It involves peeling away the masks donned for societal approval, exposing vulnerabilities, and embracing the raw authenticity that lies beneath.

And within this narrative, well-being emerges as a focal point. The pursuit of finding your best self inherently prioritises physical health, mental and emotional equilibrium, and a sense of purpose and worth. Practices like mindfulness, self-care, and fostering positive relationships become integral components in nurturing overall well-being.

So, in the absence of resolutions, this approach to finding your best self invites you to celebrate the journey itself. Each step, no matter how small, represents progress. The small victories, the lessons learned, and the moments of growth become beacons of success, reinforcing motivation and sustaining the momentum of the journey.

Ultimately, the decision not to set new year's resolutions, but instead to embark on the odyssey of finding your best self, is an embrace of your personal development as a lifelong endeavour. It is an acknowledgement that the pursuit of self-improvement is not a destination but a rich and rewarding journey, one that brings fulfilment and satisfaction in its very pursuit.
