Beyond the Rainbow: Building Inclusive Workplaces All Year Round

Pride isn’t just a celebration. It’s a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for equality faced by many?across the world, and the importance of diversity and inclusion in every area of our lives, including?the workplace.

Pride Month brings LGBTQ+ experiences to the forefront, but true diversity and inclusion goes far?beyond. It’s about cultivating a working environment where everyone feels valued, respected and?empowered to be their authentic selves, regardless of sexual orientation, identity or ability.

The 2023 LGBT+ Inclusion @ Work report carried out by Deloitte found that one third of respondents are looking to move to a more LGBT+ inclusive employer. This number is even higher for those in an ethnic minority. The report also found that less than half the respondents felt comfortable being out with all of their colleagues.

Why does this matter? A diverse and inclusive workplace is a powerful one, allowing innovation?to thrive and ensuring stronger performance. Employees at inclusive companies are more likely?to go the extra mile and achieve company success. Studies show that inclusive global companies have significantly higher cash flow, with some reporting 2.3 times more. It’s not about ticking a box. It’s about fostering a culture of belonging where everyone – including those with disabilities – can reach their full potential.

So, how can we translate the spirit of Pride into things we can all do to improve our everyday?working lives?

We can champion psychological safety, by creating a space where employees feel comfortable?expressing themselves openly. We can encourage open communication, active listening and?healthy debate. We all think and work differently. Celebrating those differences will nurture an?environment which accommodates diverse learning and working styles, and physical needs.

We also need to actively challenge discrimination when we come across it. It’s easy to turn a blind?eye, but being an advocate for inclusivity is about more than changing your profile?picture for Pride month.?In more than half the world, LGBTQ+ people may not be protected by workplace law.

Let’s make diversity and inclusion an ongoing conversation. Let’s not make Pride the only time we?talk about it – we all need to regularly revisit and question our culture, gather feedback from?employees and customers and be willing to constantly adapt our approach.?Acknowledge those who paved the way, celebrate the progress that has been made and be the voice for those who can’t yet have one.
